Estimating through Building
Information Modelling (BIM)
In the normal cost estimating process, estimators typically do manual take-offs from the CAD
drawings or importing the digital drawing into a cost estimating package. As projects are
increasingly complex, such traditional method of cost estimating may result in inaccuracies
that could be due to human errors or from CAD drawings.
By using BIM models, the productivity and accuracy of cost estimating process can be
enhanced since no manual take-offs is required. Quantities are able to be instantly generated
from the BIM model thus improving the consistencies of the cost information in relation to the
changes made to the design of the project.

Introduction

This half-day workshop on improving efficiency in cost estimating through BIM is designed for
Developers, Construction Managers, Quantity Surveyors, Cost Engineers and those who would
like to associate BIM with costing solution in order to deliver better results to clients.

Details

Course Objective

The workshop aims:

- To introduce how BIM has been successfully implemented in cost estimating through
case studies and
- To train participants hands-on technical knowledge and skills to perform cost estimating
and take-offs from a BIM model

Course Outline

- Case studies of BIM for cost estimating and quantity take-offs
- Hands-on BIM cost estimating and quantity take-offs

Award
Participants who meet the criterion of 75% class attendance will be awarded a Certificate
of Accomplishment.

BE (Construction Economics), University of Technology Sydney, Australia
MSc (Real Estate), University of Hong Kong
Ken is the CostX Product Specialist with Exactal Limited with areas of expertise in 5D BIM,
Measurement Technology and estimating software. He actively drives the construction
industry in Hong Kong to apply BIM in cost estimating, speaking at many universities on
the subject including the City University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Polytechnic. He is
currently taking part in the pilot study of the Hung Shui Kiu Project for Housing Authority of
Hong Kong. Ken has worked closely with the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors on several
activities, such as leading a 5D BIM Estimating Workshop for members, and is also involved
in the HKIS and HKIBIM Joint Research Project for BIM Measurement.

By submitting and signing this application form, the company and individual applicant agree to the following:
a. The company and individual applicant has read and understood the terms of the brochure (if available) and the application form.
b. The company and individual applicant warrant that the particulars given in the application form are accurate.
c. The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) can disclose to other government agencies any information relating to this application.
d. Payment for the course must be made before the course commencement date.
e. Any Direct Debit and Direct Credit Authorisation for GIRO applications previously signed and passed to BCA will apply to payments made under this
course.
f. BCA Academy reserves the right to accept or reject the application for whatever reason.
g. BCA Academy shall at its discretion allocate a space to the registered applicant, based on availability.
h. BCA Academy reserves the right to amend any details relating to the course, revise the course fees without prior notice, cancel or postpone the course.
i. Request for withdrawal or replacement must be made in writing. Requests are subject to approval by BCA Academy:
Written request for replacement must reach BCA Academy before the course commencement date. There will be no additional charges for suitable
replacement.

- At least 2 weeks before the course commencement date: 10% administration fee is payable.
- Less than 2 weeks but more than 3 working days before the course commencement date: 25% administration fee is payable.
- 3 days or less before the course commencement date: there will be no refund of course fee.
j. The Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points indicated for any course offered by BCA Academy is subject to change and final approval
by the relevant professional accreditation bodies.
k. Funding and subsidies offered by BCA / BCA Academy or third party organisations for the courses are subject to approval. The company must make
the application for funding and subsidies. Neither BCA nor BCA Academy is to be held liable and the company agrees to pay BCA the
applicable funding amount if funding and subsidies are either granted at a reduced amount, not granted at all or if funding is revoked, for whatever reason.
