Greek word ethos-residence/where people live in


Usage evolved through time- persons mode of character
Body of principles-decides what behaviours are right, good & proper
Rules for deciding correct conduct
Rules of behaviour based on ideas about what is morally good and bad.

Distinction
Both morality and ethics deal with customs/manner in which people do
things. In modern times, it relates to the way people act-good or bad. Identifying
right conduct and good character.
Although many us use understand or use these terms interchangeably, there
are still characteristics that differentiates one from the other.
MORALITY
Specifically speaking is what we call
moral conduct/standards
How good /bad a conduct is
refer to an individuals own principles
regarding right and wrong.
Focuses between right and wrong at a
much deeper level, depends on what
influences your mind.
We do it because we believe in
something being right or wrong.
Morality transcends cultural norms

Taking away a persons life is morally


unacceptable. abortion, death penalty,
murder

ETHICS
A discipline or formal study of those
conduct, w/c is generally called moral
philosophy
refer to rules provided by an external
source, e.g., codes of conduct in
workplaces or principles in religions.
An act is unethical if there is a rule/law
banning it.
We do it because society says its the
right thing to do.
Ethics are governed by professional and
legal guidelines (socially acceptable
guidelines) within a particular time and
place
Work ethics:
Doctors- confidentiality in medical
records.
