Homework 08/03/2016.

Grado I. El
ectrica. Deadline 03/14/2016.
1. From results obtained in Secs. 21 and 22, determine where f (z) exists
and find its value when
(a)f (z) = x2 + iy 2 ; (b)f (z) = zImz.
2. Use results in Sec. 23 to verify that the function
g(z) = ln(r) + i

(r > 0, 0 < < 2)

is analytic in the indicated domain of definition, with derivative g (z) =

1/z. Then show that the composite function G(z) = g(z 2 +1) is analytic
in the quadrant x > 0, y > 0, with derivative
G (z) =

2z
.
+1

z2

Suggestion: Observe that Im(z 2 + 1) > 0 when x > 0, y > 0.

3. Suppose that v is a harmonic conjugate of u in a domain D and also
that u is a harmonic conjugate of v in D. Show how it follows that
both u(x, y) and v(x, y) must be constant throughout D.
4. Show that if the condition that f (x) is real in the reflection principle
(Sec. 28) is replaced by the condition that f (x) is pure imaginary, then
equation (1) in the statement of the principle is changed to
f (z) = f (z).

Language: The answers must be written in English. Non-trivial answers must be

explained.
No late submission is allowed. The answers can also be sent through the Moodle
platform. A link will be ready for that purpose days before the deadline.
