Assignment 1: Information Literacy


The article summarizes what has been occurring recently with Apple concerning the unlocking of
an iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino shooters. Apple has requested the court to vacate
the order and citing parts of the Constitution to back them up. This request from the government
for Apple to make new software in order to open the iPhone has caused a lot of controversy
about peoples privacy on their phones. There is also a lot of concern that allowing a software to
be made will increase the number of cases that will want the same software. As well as opening
up more cases there is also concern of general weaker security and poor encryption on cell
phones. Other companies, such as Microsoft, have supported Apple in the decision. (Panzarino)

The search engines I used were Google and Yahoo. I think that Google gave better results
because the articles it listed came from more reputable resources. Google also offered more
specific results based on the keywords I searched.

Relevance- This article relates to the topics I searched and explains what was discussed in the
first article I searched.
Authority- The article was written by Katie Benner, Eric Lichtblau and Nick Wingfield. I feel as
if they are qualified to write this article because the article is written by the New York Times
technology section.
Accurate: I think the article is trustworthy because it provided similar information to what other
articles based on the same topic discussed and I also feel that the New York Times is a reliable
resource.

Purpose- The material was written to inform about the current situation between Apple and the
government. I think the article is objective because it was primarily written to inform people of
the information regarding the case.

I used the ProQuest database because I have used it before on research and found it very helpful.

Comparison of Internet and Journal articles: I think the first internet source I found was the better
article. When I searched the CCBC database for articles relating to the topic I could not find any.
I think the internet was overall much easier to access and was very timely and up to date on the
topic.
