School Council Meeting Minutes



February 22, 2016
Call to Order 7:06pm
Present:

Approval of Minutes of January 18, 2016

Principals Report
1. Staffing Updates:
a. Michelle Ogden (Education Assistant) works with gr 5/6 and Gr
1/2s in room 4.
b. Increase Shannon Maynes (Teacher) from 0.5 to 0.7 to support
literacy and work within the learning commons
c. M.J Pinkett (admin assistant) is on a medical leave. Shannon Cavalieri
is covering for her during this absence.
d. We are in the process of finding a replacement for Susan Symington
(teacher) who will be going on maternity leave soon.
2. Provincial Achievement Tests & Student Learning Assessments
a. Gr 6s will write PATs in May & June. We have recently received word
that this will continue next year as well.
b. Unofficial PAT results will be shared with parents in June. Official
results are shared in October these results will be forwarded to the
students new schools at this time to be shared with parents.
c. SLAs are written by Grade 3 students at the beginning of the year.
SLAs enable both teachers and parents to identify and become aware
of student strengths and areas for growth at the start of the school
year. The SLA is based on Albertas Grade 2 programs of study with a
focus on literacy and numeracy. The results were discussed with
parents during conferences in November. Parents can also request a
print out of their childs results.
3. Reading Assessments: The Fountas and Pinnell (F & P) reading assessment
tool was purchased earlier this year. Teachers have already assessed any
students who are on Individual Program Plans or any student whose reading
levels they were concerned about. Teachers are continuing to work through
using this assessment tool with all students in their class. Parents are
welcome to inquire about their childs reading level during conferences or at
any other time that questions may arise.

4. Residencies we are investigating possible residencies these include


athletic residencies such as netball or tennis, sound kreations dance and/or
other types of artists. If you have heard of a residency that you would like us
to consider, please let us know. Alien In line possibly every other year.
5. Sports Day we are looking into the possibility of bringing in some different
types of activities possibly corn maze activities at school
6. Field trips When teachers would like to take classes on additional
fieldtrips beyond the one trip that is currently paid for by council, who would
parents prefer this to be paid by?
a. Discussion: Parent counsel would like it brought for a request before
bringing to parents, for an individual class to see if funding is
available.
7. Spending Requests
Mobile Smart board - $3440.41
Expanding/updating learning commons space/ Non fiction books up to
$5000
PE equipment badminton rackets, balls. Up to $500
Residencies sports - up to $ 3360


Spring BBQ
Parent council will organize family year-end picnic. Nicole moved, Lorisa 2nd

Woodman Principal Invitation
-Possibility to have principal to come in to talk to parent during coffee and talk put
on agenda for next meeting
