IIM RANCHI Parable

JANUARY 2016

We are what we pretend

to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend
to be.
Kurt Vonnegut

We draw inspiration from

the people we see around
us, the people we meet, and
the people who command
respect. Often we start off
by pretending, mimicking,

and aspiring to be those we

look up to before developing identities, and most
importantly, values of our
own. Hence, it is very important to have the right
role models in life, to have
different perspectives and
an open mind, and to learn
to view issues and challenges from a birds eye view
rather than a narrow alley
filled with biases and preformed perceptions. This is

why, at IIM Ranchi, we

create avenues for students
to meet and interact with
people who are not only
celebrated for their competence and leadership skills,
but also for their unparalleled ethics and values.

IIM Ranchi launched its Leadership Speak Series, Aarohan,
with a focus on enhancing
classroom learning experience
with interacting with entrepreneurs, industry stalwarts,
and academic gurus. Such
interactions help incorporate
right values in young minds,
impart education relevant for
a world that is ever connected,
and encourage healthy competition and collaboration. These
interactions also provide a
great opportunity for students
to exchange ideas with the
best minds from different
fields, aiding in intellectual
growth and understanding the
world from a wider perspective.

The 26th of January was celebrated with great pomp and
show at IIM Ranchi. Students,
teachers and staff all came
together to recognize and pay
homage to the day we brought
true sovereignty to our great
nation, bringing into effect the
Constitution of India. The
celebrations kicked off with
the hoisting of the tricolor by
Dr. Pradeep Kumar Bala, the
Dean (Academics) at IIM Ranchi. Dr. Bala then gave a rousing speech about this day,
asking the question of whether
we truly are a republic. He
extolled everyone to take responsibility to make the country one for all classes, and not
just the privileged. The questions asked by sir in his speech
stirred all those who were
present. This was followed by
a speech by Mr. J. Gabriel
(Administrative Officer) at
IIM Ranchi, wherein he inspired the students to take
their country to better heights
via their hard work, dedication and perspiration.
This was followed by a short
cultural program, kicked off
by Ms Ankita Thakur, a 2nd
year PGDM student at the
institute, whose melodious

and heart-wrenching rendition of Ae Mere Watan Ke

Logon tugged at the heartstrings of one and all present.
This was followed by Prof Manas performing a mellifluous
performance of Mera Mulk
Mera Desh. The celebration
ended with a surprise, as Dr
Bala surprised everyone with
his unbelievable rendering of
Miley Sur Mera Tumhara.
But alongside all the fun and
games, the students of IIM
Ranchi did not forget their
social responsibility. Samarpan, the Social Responsibility

Club of IIM Ranchi, in association with RIMS and Life Savers Ranchi, a voluntary blood
donors group, organized a
blood donation camp in our
Khelgaon premises. Students
turned up in numbers, and the
event was a success, with 36
donors donating 12 litres of
blood. The smile and joy of
giving was evident on the faces of our donors. We hope that
these traditions will continue,
making our Republic Day not
just a national holiday, but a
day we look back upon as a
day well and meaningfully
spent.

IIM Ranchi Participates in the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

"When I came
here, I was
looking for a
community.
Then I
realised I was
helping to
create one"
The country needs not only
thinkers, but the ones who
convert thoughts and words
into action. And on the 17th of
January our students decided
to do, rather than speak.
Samarpan, the Social Responsibility Club of IIM Ranchi
organized a campaign at
Ganbari village, near Dipatoli,
Ranchi, in conjunction with
Dramebazz, the IIM Ranchi
Dramatics SIG. The event began with the members of
Dramebazz and Samarpan
exhorting the local villagers to
join them at the main village
square. The Dramebazz team
then presented a Nukkad Natak on the importance of keeping the country clean, and
tried to spread awareness
about the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
The Samarpan team then distributed brooms to the local
ward councillor and village
elders, and spoke at length
about the message of our Hon.
Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra
Modi, and the dangers associated with keeping our surroundings unclean. The ward
councillor spoke to the teams,
and informed them of all the

steps that were being taken by

the village administration to
implement these campaigns in
their village. It was heartening
to watch the little children in
the area cheer the team on as
they left, and promise to try
their best to never dirty their
area again.
While management students
rarely ever have enough free
time to indulge in anything
other than the rigorous academic demands of such a
prestigious course, it was de-

lightful and moving to see

students take time out to
spread a message that is extremely important. If we, the
educated intelligentsia of the
country do not take the initiative in matters such as this,
these plans will forever be
consigned to files and offices.
Our returning students too
took a pledge to go back soon,
and try and educate more people about the Swachh Bharat
Abhiyan.
