Conventions

Spelling
• W.SP.01.01 in the context of writing, correctly spell frequently encountered one-syllable
words from common word families.
• W.SP.01.02 in the context of writing, correctly spell less frequently encountered words
using structural cues (letter/sound, rimes) and environmental sources (word walls, word lists)

Goals/Objectives:
Knowledge Goal: The student will be able to retain the information taught in the lesson with 80 (%) percent accuracy rate on the
post assessment.
Capacity Goal: The student will be able to remain attentive for the entire duration of instruction time for the daily lesson. The
goal of systematic instruction is to maximize the likelihood of a student’s success.
Commitment Goal: The student is allowed to use the restroom, and take 2-two minute breaks when necessary.

Materials & supplies needed: Elkonin Boxes, a transparency copy of the activity from the Road to the Code entitled “ELKONIN
Boxes,” bingo chips, overhead projector.
Procedures and approximate time allocated for each event
• Introduction to the lesson I will introduce lesson two on alphabetic principle to the student. Specifically I will ask the student
if she/he had ever heard of a new game called “ELKONIN Boxes,” during this time I will also pull one of the pictures out and
showed her/him what one of the cards looked like in order to active background knowledge (5-10 minutes)

• Outline of key event during the lesson Below is the dialogue of the procedure to be implemented: (teacher): “Today we are
going to read and spell some words together. “I will say a word and then together we will count the sounds we hear in the
word. The first word is (1) map, a map is a word to describe a picture representing a specific area, the map was a picture of
the United States. Next the teacher will hold up their hand in a fist with their palm facing me as I said the word “map,” I held
up one finger as I held the first sound short “m”, and I held up a second finger as I said the second sound “a,” and I help up a
third finger as a I said the third sound “p.”I then demonstrated how to use the Elkonin boxes with their corresponding letters. I
placed the picture of map in the top of the box, while simultaneously saying “now I will lead you in saying each of the sounds
in the word “map,” as I print the spelling that stands for these sounds. The first sound in the word “map” is the “mmm.” What
sound? (student’s response) Then I said: “the next sound in the word “map” is the short “aaa.” (student’s response): “aaa.”
Then I said: “now let’s read the whole word “map,” as I simultaneously slid my finger under the boxes from left to right. Next
I said: “Let’s spell the word, as I slid my finger under the word “map,” that I had written on my blank Elkonin box in order for
the student to visualize where would need to write “map” on his/her transparency. (15-20 minutes)

• Closing summary for the lesson The student will then be directed to the computer where they will need to look up five other
words that contain the same short “aaa” sound and find corresponding pictures to match with them. After the student has
found the corresponding words with their pictures they will be asked to put together a story using the words they found, and
create a blog post where they tell a coherent story using the words they encountered. The student will be given gratitude and
praise for working and completing the daily lesson plan. The student will also receive a star ticket as a reward for working
with teacher. (15-20 minutes)
Post-Assessment: I will use the same procedure as a post assessment for each of the following seven words; had, sad, sat, sit, it,
and pit (please not only one letter was changed to make the next new word). I strategically chose to place the last three words in a
row, because they all included the short “i” sound. (5-10 minutes)
