MID-UNIT TASK

You are a curator at the Esplanade Museum and have been asked to oversee an exhibit called
Worldviews in Conflict. Working with a partner, you have chosen to design an area of the
exhibit dedicated to Aztec and Spanish worldviews.

To present your idea to the museums board of governors, you have decided to provide two case
studies that demonstrate how you can relate the exhibit to worldview.

You and your partner must come up with two ideas about potential artifacts from before contact
took place. One artifact is Spanish and one artifact is Aztec. After choosing the artifacts, you
and your partner split up to individually create your artifacts.

Your task:
1. Find a partner and choose two pre-contact artifacts: one representing Spanish worldview and one
representing Aztec worldview.
2. Decide which of you is going to focus on the Spanish worldview, and which of you is going to focus on
the Aztec worldview.
3. Create, or visually represent, a replica of the artifact from the chosen worldview. You may draw, paint,
sketch, or blueprint your artifact. Other ideas are welcome but must be cleared by Mr. Williams.
4. Create a written response explaining how your chosen artifact reflects the worldview of your chosen
civilization. Respond to the following questions:
o What overarching element of worldview do these artifacts represent? (8.3.4.1, 8.3.4.3)
o How does the Aztec artifact reflect that element of Aztec worldview? (8.3.1)
o How does the Spanish artifact reflect that element of Spanish worldview? (8.3.4.3)
o How does this artifact represent one of the reasons Spain wanted to expand? (8.3.4.3)
o How might both of these artifacts represent conflict between the Spanish and Aztec worldviews? (8.3.2)
You must write your responses in paragraph form and include evidence to support your
responses.

5. Present your artifacts and explanation to the Board of Governors (the class) and answer any questions or
concerns they may have about your artifacts.
