The Deputy Director, Finace,

Mount Kenya Academy Senior School
Dear Sir
I am writing to request for improved remuneration arrangement following our meeting on
2nd Feb 2015 in your office.
In the meeting which was our first you tabled a figure of Ksh. 400 per half hour lesson
before taxes , a figure which you claimed to be standard for private music lessons.
Here are my reasons for this request
1. I reside in Nairobi and I incur travel expenses not less than Ksh. 1000 traveling to
and from your institution to carry out my classes. It is star dare practice
elsewhere that this cost is then reimbursed.
2. I currently teach an initial 16 students and my lessons have to carry on into the
late evening, precisely 9:30Pm or 10:00 PM and resume on the following morning.
As you indicated there are no further provisions for accommodation and this I will
incur another Ksh.2500 for bed and breakfast. I carry expensive
instruments/teaching aids and I also teach late and would not seek
accommodation in an location which may be cheaper for safety reasons.
3. As you mentioned in the meeting, only a lunch time meal will be provided to me
and I will this have to incur another Ksh.500 for my dinner.
4. Making the above adjustments I will earn a total of 6400 -4000 = Ksh. 2500
(before tax) for a full two days of nonstop teaching.
5. A comparable school to your institution is Kabarak High School in Nakuru where
I'm engaged in a similar program. Their current rate is Ksh.800/half hour plus
meals at their dining hall and accommodation at their guest house.
6. Another institution that runs a similar program is the International School of
Kenya which remunerates at Ksh. 1400 /half hour although they don't provide
transport or accommodation.

I would like to note that the two institutions cited above have a very vibrant music
foundation which can be attributed to reasonable satisfaction by the involved tutors
which is evident from the number of students contributed to the National Youth
Orchestra, Safaricom Youth Orchestra and their internal student orchestras/ Band are

well recognized for quality.

I'm happy to provide more detail on any of the above if you need it.
I thank you for this opportunity to present this information. I greatly enjoy working with
the school, I am pleased to give my loyalty and commitment, and to take on extra work
and responsibility. I am keen to contribute as much as possible to the schools success
in the future.
I look forward to your response.
Yours Sincerely.
