Q: What is your Name and please state your Occupation

A: My name is Nikki Giovanni, I am an award winning poet and activist

Q: How the 1920s affected you and your role in todays society?
A: I wasnt born until 1943 and even my mother was only born in 1919 so voting wasnt on her
mind for quite a while. Our sorority, Delta Sigma Theta, was created, however, to join the
Womens March and that is significant to me.

Q: What do you think the 1920s did for women?

A: The 20s liberated white women to work proudly, to dance, to laugh, to admit to love affairs,
to comfortably explore black men. We in the black community had always had that freedom
though we couldnt ride buses except in the back or get a cola in a drug storethat sort of thing.

Q: Do you think women are a fundamental component in making our society a better
place?
A: Of course

Q: How do you think the ratification of the 19th amendment affected the roles of women?
A: The white men released them from gender prejudice. It will be good when racial and
religious freedoms follow.

Q: Do you think women should have the right to vote?

A: Of course. Not only the right but a responsibility.

Q: What role do you feel women play in todays society?

A: Women give birth. This is Mother Earth. Good ideas, actually goodness, comes from us.

Q: How would you assess the conclusion that women of the 1920s (those who have
explored new boundaries, encountered change, and exchanged their insight) directly
impact all aspects of life?
A: It is my hope that Hillary Clinton will be our first elected President. We who know our
history recognize the fact that, Edith Wilson and Nancy Reagan ran the country through their
husbands elections; though Eleanor Roosevelt shared with Franklin. It will be good when we
admit women have already played important roles in society.
