Have the world counts up on the board as the chn come in for initial
impact. This is a counter that details how much of the rainforests
throughout the world are being destroyed every second.

Introduction/Mental Oral Starter
Much of the rainforest where Wallace carried out his work has now been
destroyed. In this lesson we look at how everyone contributes to
deforestation and consider how to lessen our impact.
Watch a video clip of the forest being burned down to instil an emotional
reaction in the children. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BpEP6VrYts

What has my lunch got to do with deforestation? (McDonalds) SEE
EVOLVE RESOURCE PACK FOR PROPS.
Can the children use critical thinking to consider how a simple action like
buying lunch is indirectly causing deforestation?
Answers on the board. Come and write it yourself.

lolly sticks.

Assessment opportunities/strategies:
Questioning, critical thinking, written work, body language.
Development:
Ask the children why they think deforestation can be seen as necessary.
Write answers as a table on flip pad.
Ask the chn how they would feel if I told them that each and every one of
them has contributed to deforestation today. Write it down on w/bs.
Hand around everyday household items as discussion points. CLICK ON
EVERY DAY ITEMS IMAGE IN RESOURCES FOR DISPLAY OR
PRINTING. IMAGES CAN BE ENLARGED/CUT OUT TO SUIT.
In pairs, discuss how each others item may contribute to deforestation.

Why else do people need to cut down the rainforest? What are the main
causes?
CLICK ON POWERPOINT SLIDESHOW.
The main points of this discussion session can be recorded in their
workbooks and backed up with evidence in preparation for an extended
writing task or a bigger scheme of work around deforestation.
SEND
Write down three main reasons the rainforests need to be cut down and
why. 3 arguments and 3 bits of evidence in workbooks. E.g. We need to
cut down the rainforests to make way for housing developments because
as the population grows we are running out of space.
Assessment opportunities/strategies (what, how, who, when?)
Mini plenaries, stop after each section to gauge understanding, written
work on w/bs or fact file.

Plenary/Conclusion:
Now write why you think deforestation is necessary on that same flip in a
different colour. How many more have you come up with?
What about the flip chart? McDonalds?

Have we achieved our LOs? How do we feel? What can we do about it?
FURTHER DEVELOPMENT:
Consider contacting wildlife photographer Charlie Hamilton James
@chamiltonjames , the creator of the first video, on Twitter as an example
of someone who took it into his own hands to try and prevent
deforestation by buying up 49 hectares of rainforest in Peru. Ask what
drove him to take action and what effect it has had, amongst other
questions.
