British Science Week 2016 Highlights

British Science week is an opportunity to celebrate science achievements and engage young people. A secondary school set regular science homework for Years 7 and 8 to foster enthusiasm about topics studied and develop planning and time management skills. They organized a space-themed session for primary students, who tried space food, saw NASA technology applications, and created expanding universe pictures. The school held its first Science Fair during British Science Week to showcase excellent student projects, including models of the solar system, a giant rocket, eco-islands, a periodic table, and erupting volcanoes. Certificates and prizes were awarded to winning projects from Years 7 and 8.

British Science week is a chance for the whole country to celebrate achievements in Science and to

engage young people with a subject that has such an influence on everyday lives. For this reason our
science faculty set regular project homework tasks to our Year 7 and Year 8 students. We aim to
foster enthusiasm about the science topics we study. We also aim to develop their planning and
time management skills. We also organised a session based on Space with our feeder primary
students. Miss Cowburn visited with Year 5 at Southfield Primary on Monday 14th March and the
Year 5 classes from Shaw Wood Academy came to our Academy on Tuesday 15th March. They were
able to try space food, see how NASA technology has led to better nappies and create their own
expanding universe. We also asked the primary students to produce a picture for us to explain what
Space means to them. The completed images will be displayed at the academy in the near future.
As a Science faculty we have been so impressed with the quality of homework being produced this
academic year that on Wednesday 16th March we held our first Science Fair during British Science
Week 2016. This was showcasing the very best of the many projects handed in by our students.
Parents/carers were invited to attend and were treated to a fantastic display including models of the
solar system, a giant rocket, eco-islands, a huge periodic table and even erupting volcanoes.
I hope youll agree that the students represented the values of Armthorpe Academy throughout the
event. We are incredibly proud of them including their confidence in discussing the science behind
the ideas in their work. We intend to hold a Science Fair as a yearly event and the homework tasks
continue through each term so get your thinking caps on for your next project!
