The Smart Sepsis Monitor

Alex Kratville
Global Engagement Center
Spring 2016

Project Summary
This project was to be a small computer device that
would take the biological readings of the patient,
determine if they had contracted sepsis and alert
medical staff if the patient had contracted sepsis. This
device was made from an inexpensive computer
called a Raspberry Pi and made use of inexpensive
biological sensors from Cooking Hacks. This was
important so that this device can be mass produced
for a low cost and spread around developing
countries quickly.

Project Highlights
The highlight of this project was definitely when all
of the components arrived and we were able to
assemble the device. The next highlight came when
all of the sensors were working and we were first
able to produce values for the sensors
simultaneously. The last high was when the entire
device was constructed and working as we had first
intended.

This picture is of the internal parts of the device. There is

a custom made case that fits around these pieces in order
to protect them. The size of this device can be determined
by observing the ratio of known connector sizes to the
size of the device. Shown in the picture is a micro SD
card, an HDMI port, and two 3.5 mm jacks.

From My Journal
Today all of the necessary parts required to build
The Smart Sepsis Monitor arrived. As a team we
placed them together and started the device. At first
the device did not work properly, this resulted in my
team member worrying about the state of the
components. I was actually excited however, when
building devices like this in the past they have always
begun with problems like this. I couldnt wait to
solve this new problem.

This picture shows the design of the Smart Sepsis

Monitor case. This case was specifically designed to fit
the internal components exactly. It was then 3D printed
in order to reduce waste products.
