You may use, distribute and copy XBMC under the terms of GNU General
Public License version 2, which is displayed below.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE

Version 2, June 1991
Copyright (C) 1989, 1991 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
59 Temple Place, Suite 330, Boston, MA 02111-1307 USA
Everyone is permitted to copy and distribute verbatim copies
of this license document, but changing it is not allowed.
Preamble
The licenses for most software are designed to take away your
freedom to share and change it. By contrast, the GNU General Public
License is intended to guarantee your freedom to share and change free
software--to make sure the software is free for all its users. This
General Public License applies to most of the Free Software
Foundation's software and to any other program whose authors commit to
using it. (Some other Free Software Foundation software is covered by
the GNU Library General Public License instead.) You can apply it to
your programs, too.
When we speak of free software, we are referring to freedom, not
price. Our General Public Licenses are designed to make sure that you
have the freedom to distribute copies of free software (and charge for
this service if you wish), that you receive source code or can get it
if you want it, that you can change the software or use pieces of it
in new free programs; and that you know you can do these things.
To protect your rights, we need to make restrictions that forbid
anyone to deny you these rights or to ask you to surrender the rights.
These restrictions translate to certain responsibilities for you if you
distribute copies of the software, or if you modify it.
For example, if you distribute copies of such a program, whether
gratis or for a fee, you must give the recipients all the rights that
you have. You must make sure that they, too, receive or can get the
source code. And you must show them these terms so they know their
rights.
We protect your rights with two steps: (1) copyright the software, and
(2) offer you this license which gives you legal permission to copy,
distribute and/or modify the software.
Also, for each author's protection and ours, we want to make certain
that everyone understands that there is no warranty for this free
software. If the software is modified by someone else and passed on, we
want its recipients to know that what they have is not the original, so
that any problems introduced by others will not reflect on the original
authors' reputations.
Finally, any free program is threatened constantly by software
patents. We wish to avoid the danger that redistributors of a free
program will individually obtain patent licenses, in effect making the
program proprietary. To prevent this, we have made it clear that any
patent must be licensed for everyone's free use or not licensed at all.

The precise terms and conditions for copying, distribution and modification can be found on
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-2.0.html

Prologue
XBMC is more than just another video player. Its also more than an audio player. Its even more than a combined
video and audio player. XBMC is a true Home Theater Powerhouse! It can do anything that you can think of and will
show you things that you may have thought werent even possible! Superhot looking screens that will amaze you
every time you browse your music, movies or TV Shows, actual weather and news reports from anywhere in the
world, Live Internet Television right there on your screen, YouTube movies, The latest trailers from Apple and other
sites, all with an easy to use graphical interface that looks and feel very intuitive. Even in your wildest imagination,
have you ever thought that you could TALK (yes, youve read that right) to your computer telling it to find a movie,
and it just did? Missed the latest episode from your favorite TV Show? Not anymore, XBMC will show you a pop up
when its about to air and the list goes on.and on..and on.and when you thought youd seen it all, new
applications and plug-ins are released
Now We know youre eager to experience all this for yourself, and you have probably got it installed already and
played around with it a bit and discovered the tons of extras that are available for download, and you probably also
ran into a problem or two. This is where this guide comes in. We will try to guide EVERYBODY, beginner or
experienced user, through the options and settings of XBMC to fully achieve its maximum potential. Every unit in this
manual starts off with the basics. No extras, no nonsense, just the basic installation and a brief description of the
main functionality. Every Unit has different chapters, and the last chapters in every unit will be the advanced
settings and point to some add-ons and plug-ins. There is a certain standard we try to use in this manual. You can
operate XBMC with a mouse, keyboard, remote, ipad or Iphone, you name it and there probably is a way to make it
work. This manual is assuming you are operating XBMC with a keyboard. So, all instructions are given to you for the
keyboard. In the back of the manual is a page that you can cut out and laminate to keep next to your keyboard to
help you remember the functions of each key. Youll get them memorized quite easily as they are not randomly
picked for example P for (P)lay or I for (I)nformation or C for (C)ontext. The Select function refers to your
ENTER key, left mouse button or the Select or OK button on your remote. Youll figure it out by yourself quite
easily as you go.
If you want XBMC to do something special, or you cant get a function or option to work properly you can also visit
the XBMC Support Website at http://forum.xbmc.org. It is an incredible source of information for users of all levels
and ages and can help you with almost anything.
But first we recommend you to go through this manual to show you how easy it can be to get a descent and properly
working setup in a few minutes. The initial install of XBMC will also just take a few minutes and that is where we
start off this manual.
The XBMC Development team hopes you will enjoy this product and tell your friends about it, because the most
amazing thing about this product, is that its completely free! And who knows, you might be able to contribute
yourself in the future

Downloading and Installing

In this section we will guide you in how to get XBMC up and running, where to download it and how to set it up using
Windows. We assume you have a working and up to date version of Windows installed before we begin installing
XBMC. If you do not have or do not want windows you can choose to install XBMC Live. This is a version that can run
from a memory stick, or a hard drive. There is no need for windows. More on XBMC Live is available in the XBMC
The Complete Guide.

Downloading XBMC.
First, download a fresh copy of XBMC. You can find it here or go to your web browser and type the following url:
http://xbmc.org/download

Here you can click on Windows and a download window will pop-up:

Select Save to save the file to a location of your choice. For now, just save it to your desktop so that we can easily
find it again after we have finished downloading it. When the download has finished, double click on it to start the
installation and follow the instructions on screen or read the next chapter

Advanced Options
During the initial installation of XBMC there isnt a lot that you can change. Some user however might want to
change some minor options in the installation:
Location
First thing that you can change is the installation directory. As we have stated before, IF POSSIBLE, leave it at its
default location. XBMC will run perfectly fine from any location, but there are some XBMC plug-ins that assume you
have XBMC installed in its default location. If you need to have XBMC installed in a different location just change it
when you are opted with the Choose Installation Location screen.
Language
XBMC by default selects a FULL installation which means all supported languages and language packs will be
installed. Changing the language inside XBMC will do exactly what you think. The menus and menu descriptions will
be in the language you selected. If your language isnt listed, you can even write your own translations and use it.
See XBMC, The Complete Guide for more information.
Start Menu Folder
Last thing is the Start Menu Folder. By default XBMC creates a folder called XBMC in your all programs screen. You
can change the name of this folder to anything you like. Just type the name you want, or select any folder in the list
to install it in an already existing folder.

Troubleshooting
Ideally you install XBMC on a clean machine. Windows has just been installed, no or very few other programs run
simultaneously and windows has every available update installed. Also make sure ALL of your drivers are installed,
specially the drivers for your graphics card and audio card. Sometimes the driver that windows installs during the
windows setup will make your hardware work, but not to its full potential. Go to the website of your hardware
manufacturer to download the latest available drivers and install them.
If you have all drivers installed and you still run into troubles, check the points below. If this doesnt solve the
problem, please ask for help in our online forums on http://forum.xbmc.org.

Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package

If you get an error message after the installation or if the installer has trouble downloading these files from the
internet you can try to download them manually and install them. After installing run the XBMC setup again and it
probably work. You can download the package here. Make sure you download the right version depending on your
version of windows. You can check this by clicking on the windows START BUTTON and then right click on
COMPUTER in the right half of the menu. Select PROPERTIES
Watch the red arrow. It says you have a
32-bit operating system. This means you
need to download the 32-bit version of
the package. Click on the links listed at the
bottom of this page to download your
version.

Dharma
The UN-Official Beginners Guide for Windows.

Before you begin

XBMC is setup and ready to go, but before you start adding movies or other media to it we would like you to take a
few minutes and setup some options to make the initial configuration a lot smoother. In this section we would like
you to setup XBMC so that it knows what hardware you are using it with. For example do you have 2 or 5 speakers?
XBMC needs to know this in order to function to its full potential. XBMC will work fine without these small changes
but you might run into minor issues if you skip this section, but you can always jump back here later. We recommend
you to follow it until you reach the advanced section. That part is only for using XBMC with extra add-ons that were
not installed with the standard package. You can download most of them from within the program and XBMC will
install them automatically for you without having to exit to windows or reboot.
Now lets get going shall we?

Setting up your hardware

When you start XBMC you will be presented with
the Main Menu. From this screen you have
access to all functions of XBMC. We show you what
every function does in the corresponding units. At
this time we want you to tell XBMC what kind of
hardware it is working with. To do this go to the
SYSTEM MENU by using your arrow keys on the
keyboard (UP and DOWN) and select it by
pressing the ENTER key.

In the SYSTEM MENU the first you MIGHT want to

change is the localization. Not everybody wants to
have time displayed as 4pm, while others might want
to change the character set that is being used to
properly display the characters used in your language,
for example Thai or Chinese characters.
In the system menu go to APPEARANCE with your
arrow keys and select it by pressing ENTER.

The Official Beginners Guide for Windows | Before you begin

16

Dharma
The UN-Official Beginners Guide for Windows.

You can change those settings in the

INTERNATIONAL section of the Appearance
Menu. Go to the INTERNATIONAL button with
your arrow keys. If you have highlighted
INTERNATIONAL you can enter these settings by
pressing the RIGHT key on your keyboard. This
lets you jump into the menu on the right. You have
the following options available:

Language:
Exactly what it says. What language do you want XBMC to use to communicate with you. By default this is set on
ENGLISH but you can change it to almost any language. If your language isnt listed you can even write your own
translations. More about that in XBMC The Complete Guide. For now just leave it at English.
Region:
This changes the region that XBMC is being used in. By default this is set on USA. If you do not live in the USA change
this to a location that is closest to you. Watch the clock in the upper right corner change format as you do this. By
default it states the time in American Format (am. and pm.) but you can also change to a 24-hour format. This also
changes the way the temperature is being displayed. (Fahrenheit or Celsius) but more about that in the advanced
section.
Character set:
Last one is the Character set. This is being used if the language that you have selected contains non standard
characters. For example Chinese, Thai or Arabic. Change it to the set you want it to use. More details about this in
the advanced section.
After you have made the changes go back to the
previous menu by pressing the BACKSPACE key.
This brings you back one step in any menu. Now
select the VIDEO menu.
In there you can change the ways XBMC handles
your video files and how it sends it to your view
screen.

17

Before you begin | The Official Beginners Guide for Windows

Dharma
The UN-Official Beginners Guide for Windows.

You can see there are quite some options available

here. What they all represent will be explained to
you in the advanced section. For now we would
like you to turn on the Allow Hardware
Acceleration (DXVA2) option assuming you have a
fairly new PC. If your playback has problems after
you have enabled this option, just disable it again.

Next thing we want to tell XBMC is what kind of

computer it is running on, and what extra devices
is can use. Press the BACKSPACE key on your
keyboard to go back to the previous menu as
shown in the image on the right. Go down with
your arrow keys and select the SYSTEM menu
where you specify your hardware.
Select SYSTEM to continue

In the system menu we start by telling XBMC

where it should be displayed. It can present itself
on your main screen (#1) or you maybe prefer to
have it run on your regular TV, Flat screen, beamer
or 2nd monitor. Change the DISPLAY MODE until
you have the display you prefer. Wait a few
seconds as it takes some time for XBMC to switch
to your new device.

The Official Beginners Guide for Windows | Before you begin

18

Dharma
The UN-Official Beginners Guide for Windows.

The last thing we want to adjust is our Audio. In

the previous menu press the BACKSPACE key to
go back to the system settings menu as displayed
on the right. Now press your DOWN key to
highlight the AUDIO OUTPUT option and press
the RIGHT key again to enter your menu. The
first option is called AUDIO OUTPUT as well. Here
we specify the way we have connected our
computer to our amplifier/receiver. More about
the different ways of connecting is explained in the
advanced section.
If you have connected your computer with regular audio cables you probably want to keep the default setting which
is analog. If you are using a coax or optical cable change this setting to COAX/OPTICAL and the same thing goes if
you have connected your computer with an HDMI cable. Please refer to the advanced section for more
information about the different cables.
Besides setting up what audio output XBMC uses, you also want to specify if you have 2, 5, 6,7 or even 8 speakers.
Do this in the next option called SPEAKER CONFIGURATION. Select the arrow keys on the screen and change them
according to your setup. More details on speaker setups is available in XBMC The Complete Guide.
Now the last thing we want to change before we can finally start is the Audio Output Device. This is not the same
as AUDIO OUTPUT. Here we can specify to which audio device from Windows XBMC should send its audio to. If
you have audio it probably is working already. You can force it to use the alternative digital options. More on these
settings is also available in XBMC The Complete Guide.
Thats it! We hope we havent scared you off too much with the extent of this information. We simply felt obligated
to let you enjoy your computer and audio equipment to the maximum. Thats why you bought them in the first place
isnt it? Now we are set to go and can add our media collection to XBMC. Please continue reading the next chapter
for more information on how to do so.

19

Before you begin | The Official Beginners Guide for Windows

Dharma
The UN-Official Beginners Guide for Windows.
Advanced Section
Over the last few years digital audio has become a common thing in the world of computers. Many computers are
equipped with a digital audio output. The advantages of this are significant. Of course the main advantage is that it
all just sounds better. Modern Digital Media such as Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are using High Quality audio as well as
video. These audio formats are known as DTS or Dolby Digital (AC-3). There are more audio formats available but
these two are the most common. Another major improvement that maybe is just as important is the amount of
cables. You can use a single cable for all speakers, instead of 1 cable per speaker. If you are not sure which cable you
have, or which one you should buy, please continue reading the information below which tells you a little bit more
on different kinds of cables. For full details please refer to XBMC The Complete Manual.

Analog:
These are one of the most common analog
cables people use to connect their
computer to a set of speakers or an
amplifier. If you have used this cable then
select the analog option from the audio
menu

Coax/Optical:
More people are trying to use digital audio output option their computer offers.
You can do this with either a Coaxial Digital cable or an Optic digital cable. Now
these cables can be bought for a few dollars up to even 100$... Although some
people will say there are major differences
between them (especially your sales-man) you
can buy the cheapest one you can find. If it
doesnt come apart in your hands you are good
to go In my own setup I have used a regular
audio cable with those red/black or red/white connectors at the end. Im sure you
all know them and have one of them laying around somewhere. I simply plugged
one of them into my coaxial output of the computer and the other in the coaxial
input of the receiver and guess what It works perfectly.

The Official Beginners Guide for Windows | Before you begin

20

Dharma
The UN-Official Beginners Guide for Windows.

HDMI:
HDMI cables enable the video and audio in a single cable. The dream of
every housewife less cables.. Keep in mind that the original HDMI did not
support audio! Only the latest standard HDMI 1.3 supports audio and video
over the same cable. If you have a
previous standard cable or your TV isnt
ready for 1.3 you have to connect your
audio separately. The same thing goes for
these cables as with the coaxial cables.
Dont buy the ones that the salesman says is the best. Get the one with the 2 digit
price tag, in fact, just get the cheapest one you can get.
Ok, so now you know what cable you have used to connect your computer you can set the option here
appropriately. Or you might want to run to your local dealer and get a new set of cables.

Adding Videos to XBMC

You have just finished the installation and XBMC is up running and ready for action. Go ahead and get a feel for the
screens at this stage. Click around a bit and watch the different screens. Dont change any options yet though. We
will guide you with the options in a later stage. First we need to add our movies to XBMC. After all, thats why we
installed it in the first place didnt we?
You can simply just add different folders to your installation and let XBMC get all the movie information from the
internet. This will work just fine in the beginning. But over time, you will experience that you delete the movie
information stored in XBMC and want to start from scratch again because you arent happy with the information
being displayed, or you have re-installed windows or are setting it up on a different computer. If you have a large
collection of Movies and TV Shows this can be a very time consuming operation. Therefore we want to prepare you
so that in the future, when you add your movies to XBMC again, it will take only a few minutes to add hundreds,
even thousands of movies.
To properly setup XBMC and have the best and fastest experience its best to know a little about the inner workings.
We dont want to bore you to death with how everything works under the hood because we still believe that
XBMC should work out of the box without hours and hours of configuration. At the moment, it is working out of the
box, but often, after our end-users have used it for a while, they discover there is a whole new world online with
tons of add-ons and plug-ins to install adding new functions and tools to XBMC.
To prepare you for this it is best to stick to a few standards: A proper folder structure and file naming convention.

The Official Beginners Guide for Windows | Adding Videos to XBMC

22

Dharma
The UN-Official Beginners Guide for Windows.

Preparing your movies

If youre reading this, you have already installed XBMC and it is running with the standard settings. Feel free to
browse the screens a bit, but dont change any settings yet. Also dont be alarmed if you get an error message every
now and then. XBMC is looking for movies and other information but nothing has been added yet!
Before we tell XBMC where are movies are stored let us give you some advice on how to setup your folder structure
in windows. There are many advanced features in XBMC. There are also a lot of additional skins that can be
downloaded to make XBMC completely different with the click of a button. Many of the extra functions in these
skins rely on a standard folder structure. It can be a lot of work to adapt your entire collection to this new structure,
but it is well worth the effort. There are also programs that can help you organise your movies into a proper folder
structure. Lots of users use these programs to download new fan-art and posters, actor information and trailers. Feel
free to give them a try. Some widely used programs are Ember Media Manager (revisited) or Media Companion. For
more information please visit their websites. But XBMC can do this as well...
The folder structure that XBMC works best with is as
follows. We have used Toy Story 3 as an example:
X:\Home Theater\Movies\Toy Story 3 (2010)\Toy Story 3
(2010).avi
Movies is the main folder. It is STRONGLY
RECOMMENDED that you store each movie in an individual
folder!
Okay. Heres the deal: XBMC is looking inside the movie for information about the movie. Most information is stored
into a file called <moviename>.nfo. It also scans for posters, DVD Covers logos or Fanart. All this extra information is
stored in files that have a standard filename.
For example folder.jpg. If you have all your movies in a
single folder, there can only be one file named
folder.jpg. The folder.jpg file usually is an image or
poster of the movie in the folder. But if there are 500
movies in a single folder, then XBMC doesnt know for
what movie that image is. If you have a separate folder
for every movie, there can be a folder.jpg in every folder
containing a movie. Doing this lets XBMC scan your
folders for movies MUCH faster and you can start using
external program to maintain your movie details.
For more details on the files that XBMC stores in each
movie folder please check the advanced manual.

23

Content of the folder X:\Home Theater\Movies\Toy Story 3

(2010)\

Adding Videos to XBMC | The Official Beginners Guide for Windows

Dharma
The UN-Official Beginners Guide for Windows.

Preparing your TV Shows

Just as XBMC stores information in the individual folders of your movies, it also stores information about your TV
Shows. The format is basically the same, but there are more files involved.

The folder structure works best as follows:

Inside your main folder, we called this Home Theater in our example we had
different subfolders for our movies, TV Shows, etc. Inside the TV Shows folder
we have the different shows where each show has its own name. Some users
have all the episodes inside that folder, but XBMC prefers them to be split into
different seasons as well. This way, you can have different fanarts for every
season, adding more eyecandy and wow factor to your setup.
For specific details about the files XBMC stores in these folders and how you
can change the way XBMC looks using these files please check the advanced
section.

Adding movies to XBMC
When you start XBMC for the first time, you are presented with the Main Menu. The screen looks like this:

The Main Menu allows you to choose what you

want to do in XBMC. Listen to music, watch movies
or TV shows, look at some pictures and other
options as well. First select the VIDEOS option to
open the VIDEOS submenu.

There it is. As you can see it is still empty. We can

choose to use some standard Video Add-ons to
watch Internet TV, or add a source to XBMC. By
adding a source we tell XBMC where are movies
and TV Shows are located. More about the video
add-ons in XBMC The Ultimate Manual. For
now we just want to start adding movies to XBMC,
so we begin by adding a source
Select Add Source to open the next screen:

This has opened the Add Video Source menu. As

you can see it is empty as well. It says <None>
because we are adding a new source that hasnt
been defined yet.
Lets select Browse to add a source and tell
XBMC where our movies are stored.

XBMC displays a list of possible sources it has

found on your computer. This includes all the
drives found on our computer. Hard drives, CDRom drives, external USB drives, everything. Select
the drive that contains your movies. In this
example, our movies are stored on drive H:
which we have selected.
Press the ENTER key to open the drive and keep
browsing until you are inside the folder where your
movies are stored.

As you can see we have arrived in the folder that

contains our movies. Every movie is in each own
folder and we have added the year of release
behind the title. This will help XBMC in correctly
identifying the movies if there are more movies
with the same title, or remakes. For example the
movie 3:10 to Yuma which was released in 1957
and had a remake in 2007. Now XBMC knows we
have the remake and will find the correct
information on the internet.
Select Ok to continue
There we go We have added our first movie
source. In the bottom half of the screen we can
give this source a name. We have named in HD
movies since the folder we have selected contains
all our Hi-Def movies.
You can add more than one folder here. Just click
on Add to add a new entry and then Browse
again to select the source you want to add. Sources
can be scattered over multiple drives, even on
different computers. Just tell XBMC where to look
and it will find
Click OK once more

Ok. We now have given XBMC a

media source. It knows we have
media files in a folder, but what is in
there? This screen lets us tell XBMC
what kind of files are in the folder
we just added. Click on the small
arrows and select (Movies). On the
right side of the screen we can
choose a scraper. By default there is
only 1 scraper installed. More on this
later. Just leave it as it is. If you want
to automatically scan this folder for
movies, then click and check it in the
lower half of the screen. If you have
named your folders like we did in
our example, you can also check
Use folder names for lookups.
Normally XBMC will read the
filename inside each folder and use that to try and identify your movie. We have named our files identical to our
folders so we dont need it, but if you havent changed your filenames and kept the original filenames like Saw VI
(2009) 1080p avchd dvd9.iso then you might want to check this option. It is not necessary because XBMC can still
find the correct movie most of the time, just in case
Were almost there. The last thing we can set are the scraper settings. Click on Settings in the lower left corner to
change settings of the default scraper.
Here we can tune the way XBMC
finds information about our
movies. Enable Fanart will display a
full-screen background image of
the movie. You can enable movies
trailers and choose the resolution
of it, choose the standard language
you want the information to be
displayed in and lets you also grab
the IMDB ratings for the movies.
Leave it as it is for now. More
details about these options will be
in the later chapters
Click OK to proceed to the last
screen.

Adding Videos to XBMC | The Official Beginners Guide for Windows

Dharma
The UN-Official Beginners Guide for Windows.

The last thing XBMC wants to know

is if you want it to start scanning the
folders for new movies.
Just click on Yes and it will start its
scan for movies. If this is the first
time you ever did anything like this it
might take a LONG time, depending
on the size of your collection. If you
have worked with XBMC in the past
and have all the pictures, artwork
and NFOs stored in your movie
folders it will take just a few
minutes, even if you have over a
thousand movies.
You can continue to work with
XBMC while it is scanning, so go
ahead and click on Yes.

There we go, we have finished setting up are movies and are ready to go! Wait for XBMC to finish scanning all the
movies. Once the movies are scanned XBMC will have a Library. In there the program stores a list of all the movies
it has found, where they are located and which images go with it. It finds all this information automatically. The
library is the best thing about XBMC. It no longer displays us with a list of movies, but presents you with a stunning
graphical interface that will Wow you and all your friends once they see it. Lets have a look shall we?

Adding TV Shows to XBMC

Adding your TV Shows is also pretty straightforward It works almost exactly the same was as you add movies,
except you tell XBMC that your media source contains TV Shows instead of movies. Here we go again

Just as we did with the movies,

select the VIDEOS option from the
Main Menu

The VIDEO-FILES screen is where you

can choose to add more sources
which is what we want to do. Add a
new source by clicking on Add
source

This opens up the Add Video

Source menu again. As you can see
it is empty as well. Now lets tell
XBMC where our TV Shows are
stored.
Click on Browse to add the
location of our TV Shows to this
source.

The Browse for new share window

opens up again to help you locate
your TV Shows. First click on the
drive letter that contains your TV
Shows and then continue browsing
until you are in the folder that
contains your shows.

Once you are inside the folder that has

your TV Shows click on OK to confirm
that this is the location you want XBMC
to scan for your files.

You can also add a second location if

you have more than one drive or
folder that contains TV Shows. Click
on add and follow the same
procedure until you have all your
locations added.

31

Adding Videos to XBMC | The Official Beginners Guide for Windows

Dharma
The UN-Official Beginners Guide for Windows.

Here you can see the result. We have

added 2 locations for one source. We
have named the source TV Shows (DVD
Rips) since these 2 locations are rips
from the original dvds.
If you want you can add even more
locations for this source, or add a new
source with a different name.
Personally I like to separate my DVD
rips and my TV Rips but thats personal
preference.
After adding the 2 locations click on
OK to continue

Next thing is selecting the content.

Weve just made a new Media
source and now need to tell XBMC
what we have stored at these
locations.
In the top menu you can alter the
setting for THIS DIRECTORY
CONTAINS and set it to (TV shows)
On the right there is the Scraper.
This scraper does all the work for
you. It connects to a website and
gets all the information like episode
name, airing date but also
thumbnails and show information.

As some of you might now, the airing order of a TV show might not always be the same as the order they appear in
on the DVDs that you buy in the stores. These different orders are available on the internet as well and the scraper
can set these for you. This is also a reason why you might want to put your DVD rips in a different location than your
TV Rips. The TV rips should be sorted by airing date, and the DVD rips by DVD order.
Click on Settings if you want to change the order to DVD ordering, or click OK to start scanning.

The Official Beginners Guide for Windows | Adding Videos to XBMC

32

Dharma
The UN-Official Beginners Guide for Windows.

This screen allows you to change the

behavior of the scraper. In the
previous screen our default scraper
was The TVDB. It was the only
scraper available. You can add more
scrapers from the SYSTEM menu and
we will show you how to do this
later.
We mentioned that our media
source contained DVD Rips only. To
change the ordering of the episodes
we have to enable the USE DVD
ORDER option. The other available
options here will be explained at a
later stage.
Click OK to return to the previous screen and then select OK again to confirm the new media source.
XBMC acknowledges our new media
sources and wants to know if it can
start scanning this source for new
content. By refreshing the info it will
see the data stored in the locations
we have set for the media source
and download the information from
the internet. If you have a large
collection you might want to do the
laundry or make a huge pot of coffee
because this will take a while.

As soon as you click Yes XBMC will

start scanning the source you have
just added and you can monitor its
progress in the top right screen.

Adding Videos to XBMC | The Official Beginners Guide for Windows

Dharma

Advanced Section

Lets have a closer look at the show Heroes.

Inside the Heroes folder you can see several subfolders and a lot of files. This might seem overwhelming but in
fact they all make perfect sense. When XBMC scans your movies, it just looks at the title of the movie and starts
looking for a cover, a fanart and the movie information such as the plot and actors.
With the TV Shows it works the same, except the shows have multiple episodes which are treated the same way as
movies. As you have experienced, importing about 400 movies for the first time can take several hours. What if you
have 100 TV Shows? Most TV Shows have several seasons and there are shows with over 200 episodes! This way you
can easily have 8000 or even over 10.000 episodes on your hard drives. The first time it will take quite some time to
scrape all that information from the internet. But XBMC helps out again and stores all the information it has
gathered inside the folders of the show. So the next time you want to import all your shows, its mere minutes
instead of hours
The folder.jpg, fanart.jpg and tvshow.nfo represent the same as they do with the movies. A cover and a background
plus show information. You can see there are also
SEASON01.TBN,
SEASON-ALL.TBN
and
SEASONSPECIALS.TBN These are individual covers per season. So not
only has the show a cover, when you browse your show XBMC
shows you a new cover for each season. You can also choose to
list all episodes in one list. The button that allows that has the
picture SEASON-ALL.TBN and the show extras like behind
the scenes, deleted scenes etc go in the extras folder which
has the SEASON-SPECIALS folder. Look at the next image to
get an idea of what were talking about.

Adding Videos to XBMC | The Official Beginners Guide for Windows

Dharma
The UN-Official Beginners Guide for Windows.

The Library
The Library is at the heart of XBMC. Once you have told XBMC where to look for your media files and let it do its
magic and scrape all the information about the movies, shows and clips from the internet, the library is filled with
information. There are two main libraries in XBMC; One for your video and one for your audio. The video library is
split into a movie library, a TV Shows library and a Music Videos Library. When you add a new source, XBMC asks you
what is inside that source. You select either movies, tv shows or music videos. XBMC does the rest.
Once you have added all your movies, TV Shows, Music and Music videos into XBMC you can export the library. This
is one of the most powerful tools in XBMC. Remember when we told you that XBMC works with standard files inside
each folder? The folder.jpg and the moviename.nfo? When you export the library, XBMC writes all these files
automatically to these folders. The next time you import the movie it doesnt have to download all the information
from the internet but just reads the files in your folder and adds it to the library. As you can imagine this is MUCH
faster than downloading the information from the internet again and again.
You can also share a library with different computers in your house. That way if you update your library in the
livingroom, you dont have to update it in the bedroom or on any other computer. You can do this by using a
program called MySQL. More information on how to do this is in the Advanced User Manual.
First, lets have a closer look on what the library looks like

The Official Beginners Guide for Windows | The Library

36

Dharma
The UN-Official Beginners Guide for Windows.

The Movies Library

In the Main Menu you have a menu option called VIDEOS. This brings you to the sources you added before and
allows you to open and browse them. The content of the sources might not be the same as the content of the
library! If XBMC was unable to identify one of your movies it will not be listed in the library, so its always good to
check if all your movies were correctly identified.
In the SETTINGS menu from the Main Menu we can modify the Main Menu so that it will add the options
MOVIES and TV SHOWS. With those two menu items enabled, we can go to the library directly which most users
prefer. More on how to activate those menus later
First, lets have a look at our library shall we?

In the Main Menu click on VIDEOS to open the videos section in the screen below:
Here is the main video screen again.
Notice how it says: VIDEO FILES
in the top left corner? These are
breadcrumbs and show you exactly
where you are in XBMC, just like
navigating a website. If you click on
the picture of the little white house,
youll be transporter directly to the
main menu wherever you are.
From this screen you can browse
through your video files that you
added to XBMC earlier. You can play
a DVD from your DVD Player, watch
online content with the Video Addons button or add more video
sources.
More about all these options later.
To browse the movies that we have added to our video-sources just select the name. Click on HD Movies, this is
the name that we chose when we added the source, to open the next screen.

37

The Library | The Official Beginners Guide for Windows

Dharma
The UN-Official Beginners Guide for Windows.

Nice. As you can see the movies are

listed and the front cover of the
movie is being displayed as well.
Some eye candy to make browsing
our movie collection a little more
interesting.
This is not all though. This isnt even
the library yet. This is just the folder
structure as it exists on your hard
disk. In fact, the titles that you see
arent even movies! The titles are
the folder names as they exist on
your hard disk. To watch a movie
you have to open the folder and
select the movie file manually. Then
the movie will be played.

Lets change this behavior and

enable the Video Library. To do this,
click the LEFT key on your
keyboard or move your mouse to
the far left of your screen until a
new menu slides in as in the picture
on the right.
In this new menu that slides in you
have to enable the library mode by
selecting it. You can see the small
blue light being lit when its active or
grey when its not. Notice the
breadcrumbs again on top? Now it
says VIDEOS LIBRARY so youre
still in the videos section but youre
browsing the library instead of the
folders on your hard disks.
Once you have selected the LIBRARY MODE you return to the VIDEOS screen where you can choose which library
to browse.

In the video library screen select

Movies to go to your movie
library. Later, there will be more
options to choose from, but so far
we have only created one. Go
ahead, click on Movies and watch
it open your movie library.

As you can see this screen looks

almost identical to your VideosFiles screen. The only thing
different now is the background and
a rating behind the movie title. This
background
image
is
called
FANART and is widely available on
the internet. XBMC knows some of
these sites and will choose the
standard image to display. Well
explain how to change it later in this
manual.
This screen is the LIST screen. It
means the movies are being
displayed with the LIST layout. The
list screen is the one with the least
amount of graphics. It merely shows
you a list of the movies, a fanart
background and the dvd cover from the movie called a THUMB.

The Information screen gives you

further details about the show you have

Library Views
One of the great things of XBMC is the freedom it gives you in customizing how you want things being presented to
you. You dont have to be a programmer to change the complete look and feel of XBMC. The different library views
will do this for you at the click of a button
Go back to the TV Shows Library by pressing RIGHT on the VIDEO option in the Main Menu. You see the
overview again with the banners of your TV Shows. Now press LEFT to open the submenu on the left hand side.
Here you can change the view, just like we did in the movie library. Go ahead and select VIEW: WIDE ICONS and
press ENTER
Now you have changed the WIDE
ICONS view to the MEDIA INFO view.
This view looks completely different.
The banners have been replaced by a
text representing the show. But as an
extra you now get the number of
episodes each show has, and you dont
have to press the I key anymore to
see more details. You can also see a
smaller version of the fanart image that
is being displayed in the background.
Go ahead and change the view again.
This time select the MEDIA INFO 2
view mode.

In this view mode your banners are

back. They replaced the smaller version
of the fanart that was being displayed in
the background. The list is less long
giving you a better view of the fanart
image in the background. As an extra
bonus this screen also tells you how
many episodes out of all episodes have
been watched.
Choose the view you like the most and
select it by pressing the ENTER key.

47

The Library | The Official Beginners Guide for Windows

Dharma
The UN-Official Beginners Guide for Windows.

Now heres the cool thing. You can do

this for the individual screens. So you
can select WIDE ICONS to list your
shows but use the THUMBNAIL VIEW
to list your seasons. XBMC will
remember these choices and apply
them to all your TV Shows. The view
modes for your movies are not affected
if you change the view mode in your TV
Shows.

And YES. As you might have guessed

this also goes for the episodes screen.
What you see on the right is the
MEDIA INFO 2 screen. Here you can
see a brief description and a snapshot
of the episode you have selected.
Again, a different view mode from the
other two screens. You can change
them as much as you want. XBMC will
remember your last settings and apply
this to all your shows automatically.
Have you noticed the small white
checkmarks after the first five
episodes? XBMC keeps track of the
episodes that you have watched
already! So when youre watching an episode or two every evening, XBMC will show you exactly where you left off,
the next time you browse the show again. A small but very powerful tool.

Adding Music to XBMC

Aside from the obvious ability to play movies and tv shows XBMC is also perfectly capable of playing music. It comes
with build-in support for almost every format youve ever heard of. normal mp3 and wav songs, but also the FLAC
format which is becoming more and more popular is supported out of the box, as are a multitude of other formats.
Lets tell XBMC where our music is located and see what it does with it shall we?
Just like we did with the videos, were
going to add a media source first. Select
the MUSIC option from the Main

Here we are in the Add Music Source

screen To tell XBMC where our music is
located we have to click on BROWSE.

The Music Library

Just as with the movies and TV shows XBMC also keeps track of our music in a library. It downloads the covers from
the albums that you have and displays them for you to easily browse your music collection. No more CDs that got
lost, are misfiled, got damaged or lend to a friend and never returned. XBMC keeps things organized and easy to
access. Let have a closer look at the library.
From the Main Menu, go to the Music Library by selecting MUSIC.
XBMC presents us with an option to
specify how we want to browse the
music library. Are we looking for an
artist? Or an Album? A specific song
perhaps? Or do we want to listen to
some blues and want to browse by
Genre? All different modes in which
XBMC can present our music collection.
For now, just select Artists to see
what it has found
Select Artists to proceed

And there we have it All the artists

XBMC has found in the media source we
have specified earlier. It already has
background images and a smaller image

albums the artist we selected has.

As you can see we have only got one

album of this artist. The album cover is
being displayed in the bottom right
corner while the background image still
displays the image of the artist or
group.
Lets open up this album to see whats
on it!
Select an album in your list to proceed

This last level displays the track list of

the album we have selected. If you want
to listen to a particular song go ahead
and select it. It will start playing
instantaneously. Also notice how the
track changes color so that you know
which song is playing. More things are
happening now, you will notice that the
background image has disappeared and
a visualizer has appeared, and the
bottom of the screen shows you track
information.
There are also easy ways to play the
entire album, play all albums from an
artist, just play something randomly,
make a playlist and queuing up songs. We will show you in detail how to do this in the advanced section.
But wait this isnt all There are much nicer views available in the standard package! Lets explore them shall we? In
the next chapter well dive into the library views just as we did with the movies and the TV Shows
