HELLO FRIGHTNERS! Ie’s March and spring is in che air! Ir’s about that time that we start opening up our garages to the fresh air outside and begin cleaning and organizing our work spaces readying ourselves for the POU CCR ca ete oe March always feels like the kick off to the haunt year to me especially because it’s Transworld season, Haunters both professional and home will start to decend upon St. Louis to see the latest and greatest offerings from haunted house vendors from around the globe. It’s San when our haunt plans start to evolve and take shape. If your attending the Transworld Haunted Attractions show you may see that one new prop that helps complete a scene you had in mind or maybe it totally changes what your original plans called for but regardless of which it is it get’s your SO en eect c tees For me personally I love seeing all the pictures and videos that get posted online. I cannot lie and tell you that I have been to Transworld because Ihave nor but I still get to experince it through the lens of other haunters and am greatful for that. I often look to see what some of my favorite companies have come up with each year but Iam always looking for those companies that are new to the show because there are often many gems among them offering new and unique items. My personal interest lies withing the realm of video effects and even puppetted monster effects because I want to continue to expand on my own home haunt and add these to it. I have experimented with video effects the past few years doing the ever popular trio of singing pumpkins, a madame Icota talking head, animated tombstone and even full movie screen surrounded by silouetted trees that featured a hoard of walking zombies, werewolf transformation and Happy Halloween sign to end. This year I hope to add my very own mausoleum with ghost projection and the singig heads from the Disney Haunted Mansion. As for puppeted effects, well I don’t know about that one really haha! Maybe it will be a tag along charatcer I can hold and interact with the ‘Tots and even parents? I would love to try and build my own, time permitting. This March issue also brings us beyond the half way point of our first 6 issue run with the Fright eres le I am thinking of my own home haunt plans I am also planning ahead for the future of Fright Radio, We will have 3 new podcasts of the Fright Bites in the books and 4 issues of the Ezine completed at the i updates. [By Jason Diorio 1) What got you into sculpting and creature effects? JB: As long as | can remember, | have been making things. Whether those things were comic books or action figures, they usually involved monsters. | have to mention Jurassic Park and American Werewolf in London, seeing those movies as a kid really inspired me to learn how it was possible to make something that was so believable and seemingly real. 2) Do you remember the first thing you ever made? 1am not sure about the first thing, but | remember trying to sculpt new heads and parts for action figures in all of the wrong possible materials as a kid. Those were definitely among my first attempts at sculpture. 3) What school did you attend and how did its! you as an artist? JG; | graduated from Seton Hill University in 2014 with a BFA. All of the hours spent figure drawing and sculpting from a live model are the framework of my knowledge of form and anatomy. It also gave me an outlet to attempt much larger projects, and a deadline to finish them on. | definitely learned the importance of a solid work ethic early. 4) Which artists have had the biggest influences in you? Are there any you would love to meet and collaborate with? JG: Frank Frazetta, Auguste Rodin, JRR Tolkien, Stan Winston, Bernie Wrightson, Rick Baker, The Shiflett Brothers, Simon Lee, | could go on forever. There is definitely some kind of creative dream team though. 4) Which artists have had the biggest influences in you? Are there any you would love to meet and collaborate with? Je: Frank Frazetta, Auguste Rodin, JRR Tolkien, Stan Winston, Bernie Wrightson, Rick Baker, The Shiflett Brothers, Simon Lee, | could go on forever. There is definitely some kind of creative dream team though. ‘5) Talk to us a bit about the Jim Hensons Creature Shop show. How did that come to be? What was your experience like? Je: | honestly applied for the show not expecting to get on it at all! | was basically just a college kid sculpting monsters in his dorm room at the time, but somehow | got there and really had a great experience. The Creature Shop is an incredibly cool place, and | got to work at a scale and speed that | had never experienced previously. It was kind of like special effects boot camp. 6] Since the show what have you been up to? Working on? Je: Since the show, | have been working on some really cool projects with Ben Bayouth, who I became friends with on Creature Shop. We created a giant dragon head for the Zac Brown Band, animatronic aliens for a Rick and Morty commercial, puppets for a Madden campaign, and other commercial proj- ects. | currently work at Stoopid Buddy Stoodios with Ben, working on all kinds of things that | can't talk about! | am extremely fortunate to collaborate with and learn from incredible artists every day. 7) Do you have a favorite medium to work with? Je: Definitely clay. More specifically | really love WED. clay, Super Sculpey, and Monster Clay. 8) What would be your best pieces of advice to tell a young sculptor/ creature creator that maybe you wish someone told you when you were starting out? 2 8] what would be your best pieces of ativice to tell a young sculptor/ crea- ture creator that maybe you wish someone told you when you were start- ing out? Ie: Get back to work, kid! Ha! Never stop observing and applying what you learn. Be a sponge and learn everything you can about whatever it is you want to do. Study nature and anatomy obsessively and be a nerd about it. Be prolific, you will get better with every piece. 9) If your not creating cool creatures what w We most likely find you doing? Ie: Probably reading or watching something about cool creatures! Game of Thrones is a current favorite and very inspiring. 10) what can fans of your work expect to see from you in the coming months, years? It: Definitely a lot more of it. | am working on a lineup of new work right now to release as masks and collectable busts, as well as starting up The Character Collective with Ben Bayouth. It will feature original work and have design challenges for aspiring artists and professionals alike to tackle and hopefully inspire some incredible characters and creatures. I want to thank Jake for taking the time out of his busy schedule to provide us with this interview. It was great to watch him work while on the Jim Henson’s Creature Shop and it was such a pleasure to meet him at Jersey Fest last year. VISIT US AT: FRIGHTRADIO.BLOGSPOT.COM FRIGHTRADIO.PODOMATIC.COM AND ON ITUNES & FACEBOOK IT’S SCARY GOOD! se By: Mike Caron Mike Caron here and | build the Never Rest Graveyard home haunt in the state of Maine. My story starts 16 years ago. My girlfriend and | took our kids out trick or treating and | saw some pretty cool decorations. It brought me back to when | was a kid and made me think of my grandmother. She had this sun porch that you had to go through to go into the main house. When we walked up to the porch it was dimly lit and you opened the screen door she had it decorated with two manequins one was dressed as Dracula and the other was his victim on a table. There was blood dripping from his fangs onto his suit and on his shoes. The victim had puncture wounds on the neck. Later on | would find out the blood was just melted crayon. It was so scary to me back then that | didn't want to even go through the porch to see Her and the candy wasn't worth it, Now back to the night we brought the kids trick or treating. The end of the night came and. back at home | was telling my girlfriend the story about my grandmother and telling her next year | want to do something simular. started buying all the Halloween decorations | could find at yards sales and thrift stores and started getting ready for the big day. | decided my scene would be an opperating table with a guy on it with his guts hanging out. | had to figure out how | wanted to do it, | took newspaper stuffed a shirt pants, hands anda mask now how was | going to make guts? | decided kielbasa looked enough like intestines. | added some pumpkin seeds from our jack o lanterns and added a bottle of blood and put it ina bowl in the stomach area. All our family and friends knew We were decorating so they all came over to check it out. The one thing | left out telling them is at the last minute | cut a whole in the table so | could hide in the costume and it would still look fake. Now all night long family after family came over and | would scare them it was so funny people were standing at the entrance to the porch just to watch people getting scared and laughing. They all left that night laughing and talking about it and saying you have to go bigger and | want to help next year. The following year the Never Rest Graveyard was born! That summer | started google searching everything | could find on building my own decorations and. how I was going to go about building a walk through haunt in my back yard. | was really surprised how many people were doing them and got a lot of great ideas now to get to work! I decided kids would go through my first porch which would be my mad lab room with the same gutted guy to make people think it was going to move but this time it would not. Next you would govacross my deck down into the yard where | had my graveyard down the yard to a shed that | turned into a dinner area where some monsters were eating then past a jail with some crazy inmates and then through the pumpkin patch to the exit, That year being our firstreal year doing-it.we had about 100 people come through and our family had so much fun hanging outand scaring people we decided to make it a yearly party. We even had.a nephew that was about 5 that came over and then left to go tick or treating and came back after about 6 or 7 houses because it was more fun at our house than going after candy and he has been scaring every year after that. We slowly started getting bigger adding more rooms and hallways | was now up to 4 rooms. Now | will jump to about year 3 was trying to up my game so | started adding pneumatic props 3 to start considering | had no idea what | was doing. also had to address the plastic walls that | had all around the yard because here in Maine it can get really windy and | was constantly fixing them. This was the year | started with plywood Walls and a tarp over the rooms to keep the rain from going in and getting the pneumatics and electrical props all wet and sot could start setting up éarlier Because I had so much | wanted to, do.That year and the next few years we started getting between 200.and 250 people coming through and our sets became more elaborate. We were starting to get fans that were coming every year and we were having more fun each years because there was more people to scare.Everyone that came was so impressed with what we were doing they were telling us we had the best haunted house around. think it was around years 6 and 7 people kept telling us that we should be charging people to come through because it was so good. We really didn’t want to charge people because we were worried that they would stop coming and we were really just doing it as. reason to hang out as a family and have some fun scaring people. It did get me thinking how can | turn this into something good and it came to me we would accept donations for @ local charity. | chose a local animal shelter. The following year our local paper did a story on us and said fromnow on we would take donations for a local animal shelter but theidonations were not necessary to go through but were much appreciated. We also added 3 more rooms to the haunt ‘Thatyear we ended up with around 700 people going through and donating a bunch of toy and food donation as well as $250 ‘ash for the local shelter. Now along the way we have had some bumps in the road some small and easily fixed and some larger that could not be fixed. We had 1 year in the 15 years of doing this that we had to cancel the haunt. That year everything was against us with a month till Halloween my girlfriend got meningitis for 2 weeks and | was trying to get everything done by myself and if that wasn't enough with one week before Halloween we hada freak snow storm that dumped a foot of snow and with 4 days before the big day we lost power for 3 days and just didn't have enough time to finish and also make the yard safe enough to have 700 people going through. Everyone that came was disappointed but they understood but we reassured them we would be back net year. Now that, the haunted house was taking up almostall the room | had in the yard when | looked at the decorations in the front yard were not up to the standards as the back. | decided it was time to make a big statement in the front that would add to the whole experience and really get people talking, That spring | built about 200 feet of graveyard fencing with 12 mini pillars to connect them to with 2 atge pillars and an entrance way. | : looked at it and said this is not a big enough statement | wanted all brand new tombstones and not the ones from the stores | wanted to make my own. |fouind a great deal on 2 inch foam. board on a swap it and sell it site and got'12 sheets for the price it would have cost me for 3 at the store, My kitchen became a ‘tombstone factory I would cut all the shapes and bases outside come in and glue them together now that the kitchen was full of tombstones they still needed to be inscribed. My gitifriend wanted to try and help she did the first one and did such a good job | told her it was now her job to inscribe and paint them. October Ist came we started setting up the front yard it took most of the day the school buses started dropping kids off after school and the kids were all glued to the windows pointing and smiling and giving us the thumbs up| looked at my Girlfriend and said that is why | do this! We still have between 700 and 800 people come through and we are happy with thatIt now takes me 2 and a half months to build in my spare time while | am not at my 40 plus hours a week job. Our structure is now 20 feet by 50 feet not counting the walking path around the haunt. We are up to 5 or 6 pneumatic props and around 10 people hiding and acting in the haunt. | have always thought it would be fun to go pro but I really like keeping it as a hobby and not a job but you never know what the future holds. If you are just starting go at your own pace don't get discouraged by what other people are doing in their haunts, We all have to start somewhere the best piece of advice is have fun and remember you are doing something special that will be someones future memories to look back on and talk about and you might just inspire someon Thanks for taking the time to read my storyi!
