INTRODUCTION
You may know Sugar Crystals by their other name, rock candy, or perhaps by their most common

adjective, delicious! These take a little longer than the Needle Crystals to build, but they are easy
enough to do and their taste is well worth the wait! This project will let you create and grow your own
crystals. Throughout the experiment you will be responsible for taking notes and picture to track
your crystals growth.

HYPOTHESIS
I think it will explode inside the jar and it will grow more than it should.

MATERIALS
1. pencil
2. jar
3. water
4. sugar
5. flavored crystals
6. bamboo sticks
7. construction paper with a hole as wide as the bamboo sticks
8. clothes pin
9. clock
10. mouth
11. person to make it
12. oven
13. pot
14. air to let the crystals dry
15. spoons and cups
16. food colouring
17. flavoring
18. table or desk to eat the rock crystals
19. shelf or counter to let the rock crystals sit on while they are expanding

PROCEDURE
1. Make a top for your jar with a small hole in the center.
2. Place the skewer inside the hole and clip it or tape it so it can hang into your jar
without touching the bottom or sides.
3. In the pan start boiling the water.
4. Stir in the sugar (3:1 sugar to water) one spoonful at a time. You want to make
sure there is lots of the solute (in this case sugar) in the solution, but not so much that it
doesn't all dissolve into the solution. If you have some undissolved sugar your Rock
Crystals will start building onto those molecules rather than your string.
5. Add a few drops of food coloring and flavoring to the solution.
6. Carefully pour the solution from the pan into your clean glass jar. Make sure it's
clean, otherwise crystals will build onto those molecules on the jar and not on your string.

7. Place in the skewer into the jar through the hole. Again, don't let the string hit the
sides or bottom of the jar.
8. Find a safe spot for your jar so it won't get knocked around or exposed to too
much dust and debris.
9. Check on your Rock Crystals the next day and notice how they're started to take
form on the string.
10. Whenever your Rock Crystals are the right size for your taste or when they stop
growing go ahead and take them out of the jar and let them dry.
11. Enjoy their sugary goodness!

DATA

The whole class forgot to coat the stick

in sugar, so it didnt grow when we
were at home. Mr.kinzel coated the
sticks for the class.

Monday 18, Jan.

(the
one that says rylen, is my
jar)

Tuesday 19, Jan.

Sadly, my stick doesnt really show

because I put food coloring in my rock
crystal liquid. But it has grown quite
a bit.

Wednesday 20,
Jan.

We forgot to take the image, but my

crystals started growing on the stick
and the bottom of the jar.

Thursday 21,
Jan.

My crystals started growing even

more and we decided to put a light
behind the jar so we can see the
crystals.

Friday 22, Jan.

It grew more on the bottom then it

grew on the stick. I saw it grow even
more.

Monday 25, Jan.

It didnt grow as much, but I think it

didnt get coated with sugar that good.
I hope it grows better.

Wierd. my crystal didnt grow on the stick or the

bottom of the jar. it grew on the surface of the
liquid :\

Tuesday 26, Jan.

Overnight.. I think my stick has moved because of

the sugar on one side of the stick and it didnt
grow equally.

Wednesday 27,
Jan.

Today is the last day to to the evaluation. It grew

quite a bit it grew the most on the surface of the
liquid. 2nd most is the bottom of the jar. 3rd most
