Overview In this Experiential Exercise students assume the roles of soldiers during World War Ito lunderstand the horrors of trench warfare onthe Western Front, Fist, students are inoduced to trench warfare during World War I. Then, students are assigned the role of an Allied soldier or a German soldier and crouch in one of two “trenches” made of desks. Students view slides while the teacher reads excerpts from All Quiet on the Western Front, 1929 novel by Erich Maria Remarque about soldiers’ experiences on the Western Front during ‘World War I. For each slide, students act out different elements of trench warfare and respond to a series of experiential questions. Afterward, the teacher debrefs the experience, ‘making connections between students’ experience and that of soldiers who fought in the trenches during World War I Procedures at a Glance Before class, arrange your classroom into two opposing “trenches” and project Slide 4.34, Meet your students outside the classroom and tell them that in this activity they will learn about trench warfare on the Western Front during World War I. Have students assume the role ofan Allied soldier or a German soldier and erouch in one of the two trenches. Use Slide 4.34 to introduce students to trench warfare. Project Slide 4.3B, read aloud the excerpt from All Quiet on the Western Front in the Teacher's Guide, and have students perform the suggested actions for the excerpt. Next, ask students the questions that appear inthe ‘Teacher's Guide. Repeat this process for Slides 4.3C through 4.3G. ARterward, hold a class discussion to help students process their feelings and connect the experience with history.
