5th Grade On-Demand Writing


Assessment
The assessment consists of a 90-minute, passage-based
writing prompt, for which the students will write an
opinion paper.
This is in accordance to the Kentucky Performance Rating
for Education Progress (KPREP) that each student will
take at the end of the year, in which the students will
complete a 90-minute passage-based writing prompt, in
addition to a 30-minute stand alone writing prompt.

Purpose of the Assessment


The purpose of the assessment is to set the baseline
scores for students in the fifth grade at Sandersville
Elementary.
These baseline scores will be recorded and the students
will take similar assessments throughout the year to
measure their growth.
The assessments will be part of the fifth grade teachers
student growth goals, according to TGPES.

Method of Assessment
Essay Written Response
90-minute passage-based prompt
Students are required to choose a side of an argument and state
their claim
Students must support their claim, using information from the text
and prior knowledge
Students are graded using the Lucy Calkins Opinion Writing
Rubric

Learning Targets
Learning targets are based on the Lucy Calkins Opinion

Writing Rubric and the structure of the five-paragraph


essay.
Students must state an opinion about their topic.
Students are required to provide logically ordered reasons
that are supported by facts and details.
Students must write a conclusion that is connected to
their opinion.
Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing,
Evaluating, and Creating are all measured within the
