INTRODUCTION TO ANSYS
Finite Elements Analysis using ANSYS

2 days

Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is a method to simulate loading and boundary conditions on a
structure and determine the structures response to those conditions. The structure is modeled
using discrete elements and nodes. Each element is composed of approximate equations that
describe the element response to a certain load. The response of all the elements in the model
provides the total response of the structure. The elements of the model have a finite number of
unknowns and thus designated as Finite Elements. ANSYS is one of the most popular finite
element software packages available in the market and used by engineers in virtually all fields of
engineering. ANSYS/Multiphysics is the flagship ANSYS product which includes all capabilities
in all engineering disciplines.
This two-day course is designed to train professionals and students on the use of the Traditional
ANSYS Graphical User Interface. Students will learn how to perform linear static stress, thermal,
and thermal-stress analysis. The course also includes an overview of the ANSYS capabilities
and emphasizes on model definition with the ANSYS preprocessor. The course will consist of
lectures, tutorials, and in class exercises.

About the Instructor

Dr. Rami Hawileh is an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at the American University of Sharjah, UAE. He has been with AUS
since August 2007 as an Assistant Professor. Before that, he was a structural analyst at AREVA NP INC., An AREVA and Siemens
Company, Lynchburg, Virginia, USA (2006-2007). He was lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin,
USA (2005-2006) and Milwaukee School of Engineering, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA (2003-2006). He was a structural engineer
at the Austin Company, Schaumber, IL, USA (2000-2001). Dr. Hawileh has a PhD from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee
(2005), an MS from Bradley University (2000), and a BSc from Birzeit University (1998), all in civil engineering with emphasis on
structures. His research interests include strengthening and computational modeling of reinforced concrete structures subjected
to fire and cyclic loading. He has published over 20 peer-reviewed papers in international journals. He has also published over 30
articles in International Conference proceedings and given numerous presentations on finite element modeling of structural concrete
members strengthened with FRP laminates when subjected to static, cyclic, and fire loading.
