Introduction
Minut The introduction for this lesson will begin with a quick reminder
es
of what we have been covering in addition. I will also give a brief
review of my expectations for the students. Then I will bring the
students to the front of the classroom where we have some
space in front of the SMART board. At this point I will ask the
students to move a few desks so we have some more room.
I will explain that we will be playing a game using hula-hoops. I
will remind the student that they need to be respectful with the
hula-hoops as they are not ours.
I will explain that: I will be choosing one student at a time to be
the teacher. This teacher will be responsible for picking
students to come up and stand in the hula-hoops. These hula
hoops will represent the numbers in our addition equation. I
explain that the class will be responsible for figuring out what
numbers that the teacher is adding together. Finally, as a class
we will solve the equations on the SMART board.
After we solve a few questions, I will conclude the hula-hoop
introduction activity.
Development
I will explain to the students that we are going to be using the
unit cubes again. The students are familiar with the unit cubes
and should have no problem using them.
20
I will distribute 1 question to each pair of students at a time. The
Minut student will be responsible to use the manipulatives to visually
es
represent the addition equations and they will have to copy
down the questions and the answers into their copybooks.
I will tell the student that they have to complete about four
questions. On their fourth card they will write down the answer
and draw/colour how they have visually represented the
equation with unit cubes. Explain that each student will be
individually responsible for his or her own journals and for one of
the question cards.
While the students are working, I will circulate to see which
students will need more time, less questions or more scaffolding

arent completed will be assigned for homework.
Evaluation
The students will hand in their math journals and their completed
questions. I will go through their journals and questions formally evaluate
them. I will verify if there are students still struggling with addition and act
accordingly.
