THE FINE ART OF BALANCE

IN LEADERSHIP
JJ Mackwood

CAPACITY BUILDING THROUGH

LETTING GO

" . . . it is the development or realization of selves that

constitutes the 'good' . . . and the theory of ethics which
makes this the locus of value is called the ethics of selfrealization. By this is meant that the locus of the good
is not found in pleasure, nor in organic survival or
welfare, but in the complete energizing of our capacities
as selves or persons . . . " - Wilbur Marshall Urban

Ive come to believe that a leader is

anyone who holds her or himself
accountable for finding potential in
people and processes (p. 185).

Self-Doubt
Once we
are intent on
controlling
something,
we feel
afraid when
we meet
with
resistance.

By holding on, we destroy what we

hope to preserve; by letting go, we
feel secure in accepting what is. (p.
211)

ACCOUNTABILITY AND RESULTS

THROUGH RELATIONSHIPS

Seven Social Sins:

Politics without principle
Wealth without work
Commerce without morality
Pleasure without conscience
Education without character
Science without humanity
Worship without sacrifice
Gandhi

Do not depend on the hope of resultsyou may have to face

the fact that your work will be apparently worthless and even
achieve no result at all, if not perhaps results opposite to
what you expect. As you get used to this idea, you start more
and more to concentrate not on the results, but on the value,
the rightness, the truth of the work itselfYou gradually
struggle less and less for an idea and more and more for
specific people In the end, it is the reality of personal
relationship that saves everything. P. 263
