A Poem in Two Voices: A Christmas Carol

Final Assessment

The Goal: You will work with a partner to create and perform a two-voice
poem that reflects two different opinions or points of view about a specific
and relevant topic from the play. You will present your poem along with a
visual. You will incorporate appropriate vocabulary and dialect from the
story to make your poem authentic. You will identify a specific theme and
mood through poetic elements used within your poem.
Class Period 1
1. Investigate: What is a two-voice poem?
As a class, we will read samples, view samples, and identify poetic
elements found in sample poems.
2. Brainstorm: Whole-group brainstorming
As a class, we will identify themes and issues found within the story.
As a class, we will identify pairs of characters with juxtaposed values,
ideas & beliefs.
3. Pick a partner with teacher approval.
Class Period 2
1. Draft/Create:
Partners select a topic and a pair of voices for the poem.
Review notes/do research on the topic.
Partners identify three poetic elements (or more) to incorporate in their
poem.
Partners brainstorm words, phrases, and ideas for the poem using
planning sheet.
Class Period 3
1. Edit/Revise:
Partners work to create a draft of the poem.
Partners select a presentation methodlive or recorded.
Partners rehearse and/or record poem for presentation.
Partners select ONE significant and appropriate picture to go with the
selected theme/topicthe picture should reflect the desired tone and
mood of the poem.
