Mechnical properties

Conclusion: Benefits of it use

What is a composite?
A composite material is a material made from two or more
constituent materials that remain separated in the final structure.
The new material may be preferred for many reasons: materials
which are stronger, lighter, or less expensive when compared to
traditional materials.

Laminates
A laminate is a assembly of plies
of reinforced polymer. Each ply is
formed by a polymer acting as
matrix and a fiber acting as
reinforcement. The polymer in the
matrix can be termoplastic or
termoset, and there are a lot of
different type of fiber, depending
of the material on which are
made.

Mechanical Properties

Laminate VS Aluminium

Elastic Modulus
Expoxy and carbon fiber laminate: 200 650 Gpa
Aluminium: 70 Gpa

Tensile Strength
Expoxy and carbon fiber laminate: 2 7 Gpa
Aluminium: 200 Mpa

Impact Strength

Bad impact strength

Interlaminar crack

With a small impact, the tensile strength decreases around a

fifty percent

Density

Aluminium:
2,7 Kg.m-3

Titanium:
4,5 kg.m-3

Steel:
7,8 kg.m-3

* Laminate:
1,5 2 Kg.m-3

Conclusion

Mechanical properties far superior that Aluminium

Bad impact strength

Low density High mechanical properties per weight
