Limited response

Definition

Used to evaluate students with limited speaking

Skills. Three of the most useful ways are
directed

Responses, question about picture and reading

Aloud.

Directed response

Forms of directed response cues are artificial and

close to imitation

e.g. Beginner level

(cue) `` Tell me he went home ``

Response would be simply a repetition of the

last part of the examiner

Picture cues

Can be used with young children and with

young people or adults who have limited

response. e.g. Simple line drawing :

Tell me about this picture
What's happening there ?

Reading aloud

This technique provides good control

Students respond in same way so its easy to make

comparison

Test of this kind normally easy to prepare

Limitations

This technique cannot be used with young children

who haven't learn to read and with advanced

young people and adult.

Alternate forms of Limited

response
Mimicry
Highly controlled elicitation technique
Evaluates other skills at the same time e.g.
- Short term memory
- Listening

Advantages

limited language skill

These provide helpful ways of getting the

specific responses that you want

Cont..

These techniques are generally not

threatening

There is a tendency for these to be interesting

and lifelike. Generally they have rather good
face validity.

Limitations of limited response

item

Some important features of speaking are not

measured e.g. fluency and appropriateness

No direct relationship between speaking

proficiency and ability to read aloud or imitate

Students responses are somewhat difficult to

evaluate particularly extended speech

Additional difficulties with reading aloud and

there is also tendency to focus exclusively on

pronunciation.
