Class Outline 09

Students will be covering the following strategies and
skills in this course:



Decoding Strategies: (SRA): These strategies are designed to help students that are disfluent
or may confuse similar words. It emphasizes rhyming, sounding out sentence reading, and story
reading. This skill must be combined with vocabulary and comprehension instruction so that
English-language learners understand the goal of reading-comprehension.

Developing fluency and comprehension:
Skimming this technique is useful when seeking specific information rather than reading for
comprehension. (dates, names and places)
Scanning involves moving your eyes quickly seeking specific/key words, ideas and phrases.
Youre concentrating on finding a particular answer.

Vocabulary Skills:
Antonyms - are words that mean the opposite of another word.
Synonyms are different words with identical or at least similar in meaning
Multiple Meaning words- these are single words that have more than one meaning.

Read -Alouds will support oral language development, improve comprehension, provide
a model of fluent English reading. Listening is the most primary of all language skills!
We will focus on pre-while and post listening activities.

Reading (Computer) Lab - to reinforce comprehension skills through listening and reading
utilizing a software (Rosetta Stone) that will allow each student to self-pace through the
modules to ensure mastery of skill objectives as he or she moves toward target language
independence. It employs interactive, multimedia technology to replicate the environment.
Grammar, syntax, and vocabulary are taught through real-life experiences.

Writing:
Dialogue Journals students will write short entries addressed to the teacher. The teacher will
reply to questions, modeling correct English usage. The dialogue journal will also serve as an
informal assessment tool.
