Arban Scales For Tuba ARBAN'S SCALES In Arban's original Method for the Cornet he states the following: alt is, however, of urgent importance, that scales should be diligently practiced; for this reason, knowing as I do the importance of this branch of study, 1 have treated it at length, and in every variety of key. By this means a perfect equality, of sound, as well as a legato and correct ‘method of playing, may’ be obtained. Arban's scale patterns remain today as some of the best yet devised for use on brass instruments. I have found them to be of great value to me during my professional career. However, the technical demands of the mid nineteenth centusy were not as demanding as today's. Although Arban felt his pattems were fairly presented throughout the keys, many of today's players could use a complete version of Arban's Scales. This book was created to fill that need. Each pattern from Arban's Scales is presented fully in every key. In addition I have added a set of rhythmic variations from which the player can choose. Also there is a set of articulations that can be combined with the rhythmic variations to give the player many thousands of ways to play each scale. Itis not intended for the player to progress methodically through this concatenation of scale patterns and variations. Rather it is my intention to give the player a resource from which to choose material that may be helpful in solving technical problems.
