THE DISCOVERY OF
ELECTROMAGNETISM

It was discovered by a Danish physicist

in 1820 while he was holding a
compass near a wire that contained an
electric current.
He noticed that the compass needle
didnt point to the north while he held
it near the wire.

ELECTROMAGNETISM
Electromagnetism is the interaction between
electricity and magnetism.
The magnetic field generated by an electric current in
a wire can move a compass needle, but its not strong
enough to be very useful.

SOLENOIDS & ELECTROMAGNETS

A solenoid is a coil of wire that produces a magnetic
field when carrying an electric current.
The strength of the magnetic field of a solenoid
increases as more loops per meter are used.
An electromagnet is made up of a solenoid wrapped
around an iron core.
The magnetic field of an electromagnet can be
hundreds of times stronger than the magnetic field of
just the solenoid.

ELECTRIC MOTORS
An electric motor is a device that changes electrical
energy into mechanical energy.
They all have an armature, which is a loop or coil of
wire that can rotate.
Electric motors that use direct current have
commutators that reverse the direction of the electric
current.

GALVANOMETERS
They measure current and are found in equipment
used by electricians, such as voltmeters.
They have an electromagnet between the poles of a
permanent magnet, and the poles of the
electromagnet are pushed away by the permanent
magnets poles.
The electromagnet is attached to a pointer that moves
along a scale to show the size and direction of the
current.
