INSTITUTION OF KNEZ AND PRIMIUR
IN TURKISH PERIOD

Institution of knez and primliir had great significance and role in the Turkish system of govemment. I presented this mstitution through the period of establishment of the Turkish rule over our ethnical territory, and later through the
entire XVI and the great part of tlie XVII centurv. This is the period when the
sigmficance of the institution is the greatest, as the inslrument of the Turkish
govemment. Institution had important role in introduction and stabilization of
the Turkish rule, but when Ottoman feudal system got stronger for account of
peasantrv autonomv. social position of knez and primiur was imperiled. When
they lost previous status and privileges, they took part in national rebellions and
became politically unreliable, which provoked a decay of the institution 111 the
form as I presented it. Institution still existed, but now as a form of national struggle against Turkish govemment.
