During the early stages of literacy, children need to be encouraged to begin writing for
different purposes. One excellent starting point is to get them to write their own name
and those of others in their family. Set aside somewhere quiet where they can practise
some of their new found writing skills using different markers, crayons, pencils etc.
Always congratulate them and give them praise when
they write something down. Remember that the first
early attempts may just be marks on the page.

Encourage your child to draw a picture of themselves and then

write their name underneath or across the picture.
Ask your child to draw some pictures of other people in their
family or their friends and together write their names underneath.
With older children write down their names and ask them to copy
them underneath.
Provide a selection of writing materials so that they can write
things down during role play.
