MAE 423: Homework 5

Ramjets
Assigned: 03/14/16
Due: 03/24/16
Problem 1
Find the thrust specific fuel consumption (TSFC) of a ramjet that is being considered for flight at M = 1.5
and 50,000 ft altitude. The maximum temperature in the engine is 2500 K. Ignore aerodynamic loss in the
engine. Use a conventional hydrocarbon fuel (QR = 45,000 kJ/kg), and assume = 1.4 and cp = 1000 J/kgK.
Problem 2
A ramjet is traveling at Mach 3 at an altitude of 4572 m. The external static temperature is 258 K, and the
external static pressure is 57 kPa. The heating value of the fuel is 46,520 kJ/kg. Air flows through the
engine at 45.35 kg/s. The burner exit total temperature is 1944 K. The specific heat ratio can be assumed
to be 1.4.
a) Find the thrust in kN
b) Find the fuel-to-air ratio
Problem 3
Write an explanation of the operation of the J58 engine that powered the SR-71. The discussion should be
complete, such that someone without knowledge of the engine would understand how it worked after
reading what youve written.
