Imaging
Description:

This is a photo that I took myself, and then I editted it using

Photoshop and Adobe Indesign.

Date:

Course/ Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 02
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Nikon Camera
Adobe PhotoShop
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Learn basic photography skills.

Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download
it. Size and crop the image. Add design elements and create
a photodesign. I used shape tools to create a banner. I used
the text tool to create the information found in the image.

Process:

I took the picture using a Nikon Camera in front of an

American Flag. I wanted to create something that would be
beneficial to kids and their parents. So I chose a toy drive for
Children whose parents are in the Military. I then cropped the
photo size and adjusted its colors, making it more vibrant and
appealing to the eye of my audience. After my image looked
the way I wanted to, I created a banner and a title along with

Logos
Description:

Three logos I created using Adobe Illustrator for a make

believe business I created.

Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Learn skills in Adobe Illustrator. Learn to use pen tool.

Learn to use shape tool effectively. Learn to use effective
placement.

Process:

I started this project by making up a company. I chose

Kuta Electric because Kuta is my last name and my dad
used to work for a power company, and I always imagined
him owning it. After that, I sketched out four different logos
that I think would fit for. Then I went to Adobe Illustrator
and created the logos. After reviewing the logos with other
people, I decided that the top one I created would be used
for my final project. I made appropriate changes, and finally
created a greyscale logo, and a white one in a colored box.

Brochure
Description:

A two sided brochure for a place or event of my choosing.

Adobe Indesign
Google

Objectives:

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.

Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images, not including the logo.
One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the
cutout shape of the image.
Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers, and
subheaders.
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process:

I decided that I wanted my brochure to be about the Salt Lake Comic Con event and I started
by creating a trifold diagram in InDesign. I knew I wanted all of it to resonate to my audience,
any one with an interest in pop-culture, movies, and comics, so I used a large image of the
Salt Plaza being surrounded by superheroes as my background. I lowered its opacity to 46,
and put a red backdrop behind it. I also created a new logo for the already existing event.
Since Utah is known for its mountains and high population of Latter-day Saints, I created a
black, white, and blue logo of the Angel Moroni in front of some simple mountain shapes. I
did my research and gathered an idea of what sort of things occur during the comic con, and
then created the body text of my brochure. I made paragraph styles so that there is a space
between all of my paragraphs, rather than an indent. There is also text wrap around on of my
image of Jango Fett so that the text takes shape with his body. Each Header has text wrap as
well so that there is a good space between the images and headers, leaving a good amount of
white space.information. After playing with the color scheme, this was my outcome.

Objectives:

Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work

together)Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design.Choose a color scheme and
typeface(s) that work for your message and audience.
Learn to use only Word design features without using any
Adobe programs, including Photoshop.

Process:

I knew from the get go I wanted my event to involve a high

school or some sort of youth program. I took the time to
sketch out four different layouts once I decided a movie
event would be a good fundraiser for a high school. After
that I went through my person magazines and art to find a
picture that would relate to that; and thats when I find some
art projects I bought from a freelance artist depicting the
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I then scanned the image and
made one of my sketches a reality using Microsoft Word. I
used an Epson Scanner, Microsoft Word, and Apples export

Montage
Description:

Spiritual Montage of images and colors of my choice.

Date:

02/13/16

Course/ Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 02
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe PhotoShop
Google

Objectives:

Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow. Unify a layout with a consistent
theme and dominant spiritual message. Learn to blend two or more images together gradually,
using masks. Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements.
Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image. Apply typography principles (titles, quotes,
events or scripturesyour choice). Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text
size. Theme word(s). Select good quality images

Process:

1. I cropped my background image, the one of the woman and child, to 8.5 x 11 inches.
2. After that I took an image of a sunset on a seashore and used the lasso tool in Photoshop to
transfer the shining rays into my background. Using a mask I was able to blend the sun into the
background at 82% opacity with a black brush.
3. Then I placed an image of Gods hands into my background. Using the same masking technique
I was able to blend it in at 100% opacity, using the black brush again. The image had similar
enough color that it didnt need to fade at all into the background.
4. I chose a simple font for my body text, and a more decorative, yet neat font for the three
words that mean the most in this picture. The most meaningful words are filled by overlay, so
that they capture the essence of the picture. The other words were colored using the color drop
tool, and pulling the blue color off the mothers dress.
5. I created a rectangle, coloring it with the color drop tool and using the gold color to the right
of the image, below the suns rays. I then placed the texts within that box, and aligned them to fit
neatly.
6. For my final step, I added Levels, Vibrance, and Selective Color adjustments, to make
everything feel warm and get my message across clearly.

Flier
Description:

Flier created using elements given to me by the company in

Indesign.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Indesign

Objectives:

Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.

Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.
Retrieve image and logo from links on this page.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign
document to keep links in InDesign intact.

Process:

I first created some sketches of my flier, which was harder

than I expected. I then chose one and made a rough draft of
it. Then I had my teacher and a roommate critique it. I then
made my final draft which is what you see now.

Web Page
Description:

Web Page created for make believe business.

Program(s)/Tools:
TextWrangler

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side
is 300 500 pixels.
Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it
appeals to a target audience. (Minimum of 200 words. Include rationale for
colors, appeal to target audience, design skills, etc,)
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. (Include all required tags Doctype
(provided), html, head, title, meta charset (provided), body, h1, h2, p, ol or
ul (with li tags), img, br, and a link to blog). Open the HTML page in a web
browser and capture a quality screen shot with .5 inch margins for printing.

Process:

To construct my CSS and HTML, I used an application called Text Wrangler.

I am by no means an expert in this process, so a lot of it was just trial
and error. I was able to post my image (logo) into my HTML, and used the
Esplin Color Wheel as a reference for color in my CSS. Once I had all the
text out and positioning of my content, I combined the two documents, CSS
and HTML, into one folder so that they activate for each other. I also used
padding around the logo and text so that they would not be too close to
the edge of the web page. This was one of the most challenging parts of
working with CSSphoto size and adjusted its colors, making it more vibrant
and appealing to the eye of my audience. After my image looked the way I
wanted to, I created a banner and a title along with information. After playing
with the color scheme, this was my outcome.

Business Cards

Business cards created for my makeblieve business using InDesign and Illustratior

Course/ Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 02
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing
logos or use previous designs. Dont use photos or live trace.Use the new logo to
design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Photos are okay on
business card and letterhead as additional design elements. Letterhead should be
8.5 x 11, full-bleed optional, but trim only .125. Business card should be 3.5 x 2
and printed above center on a vertical page.

Process:

I started by creating my first logo for an imaginary company called Kuta Electric.
This logo was made by combining three diamonds together, and adding a text box
with the name Kuta in the middle. I used this as a backdrop for my business card.
Then I put all of my information on the card, and added the logo a second time,
but that looked off.
I used the square shape tool to create business card, measured 3.5in x 2 in.
So I decided that wouldnt be my logo, but I would still use it as a backdrop. My
logo then became an illustrated electric socket that I created with round ended
squares. I also included this logo on the header of my project.
The diamond shape backdrop has an opacity of 42%. I personally think it looks
awesome, and the people who critiqued me didnt have a lot to say about it
