Students will learn to expose a photo using ISO, shutter speed, and
aperture (settings).

Students will be able to identify in a comparative photo which direction a


setting has been changed knowing that it has been changed. And students
will be able to identify which setting has been changed and its direction
without knowing which has been changed.
9 sheet comparative booklet (1 booklet for each group).
Pen/pencil and paper for recording answers.
Projector for powerpoint (if available) or whiteboard.
OPTIONAL: DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) camera.

Ask:

Difference between a DSLR and a point-and-shoot/phone camera.

Show:
- Terminology: Exposure, ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed (settings).
- Explain theory behind each setting and how they affect exposure.
- Show effect of each setting with projector (if available).

Prepare (1 minute):
- Ask students to get out a piece of paper and pencil/pen.
- Hand out booklets to each group.
- Explain goal of booklet/how to complete.

Booklet Work (4-5 minutes):


- For first 3 photos groups will be told which setting has changed and
asked to identify in which direction the change has occurred.
- For the remaining 6 photos groups will be asked which settings
have changed in the photo and in which direction they have
changed.
Compare (1-2 minutes):
- Ask each group for their answer.
- Explain the correct solution to the question.
- Record solution on board.
Learning to use a DSLR (2-4 minutes):
- Show how to set camera mode.
- Show how to take a photo.
- Show how to change settings on a specific model.
- OPTIONAL: if you have a DSLR available show the students how to
access photos on that particular model.

Closure (1 min):
- Show some entry level DSLR cameras and their price.

Time: 1-5 mins

OPTIONAL:
Use DSLR (4 mins/remainder):
- Allow students to experiment with a setup DSLR for remainder of
time.
