PREFACE

The 2000 Population and Housing Census of Malaysia was the fourth
decennial census to be conducted since the formation of Malaysia in 1963.
The 2000 Census provides a wealth of information on the number of
persons and households together with a wide range of their demographic,
social and economic characteristics. In addition, it also yields information
on the total number of living quarters by type, structural characteristics
and availability of amenities.
The General Report of the Population and Housing Census 2000 presents
tabulations as well as highlights on the trends and patterns of population
and characteristics of households. Data and highlights on housing stock,
type and pattern of ownership were also presented in this report.
The success of the 2000 Population and Housing Census was due to the
proper

planning,

full

co-operation

and

assistance

from

various

departments at central and state levels. I would like to take this

opportunity to express my profound gratitude to the Census Steering
Committee, the Main Users Committee and Census Technical Committee
for their policy guidelines and technical support. Appreciation and
acknowledgement also go to the state governments who are responsible
for the operational aspects and supervision of the census enumeration,
the Ministry of Information, the Directorate of National Mapping, the
Department of Orang Asli Affairs, the Royal Malaysian Police, the Prisons
Department, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Education, the
Ministry of Health and to others who contributed in one way or another to
the conduct of the census.
I would also like to express my appreciation to the officers and staff of the
Department of Statistics who were involved in the planning, technical and
processing aspects of the 2000 Census as well as the thousands of census
supervisors and enumerators who had assisted in the conduct of the 2000
Population and Housing Census of Malaysia.
Finally and most importantly, I wish to thank the people of Malaysia who
willingly gave their co-operation in making the 2000 Census a success.
