Observation Notes for Brooklyn Westfall

3-31-16

Lesson: Whole group science

For this observation, Ms. Westfall was working with the whole
group of 3rd grade students during science. I observed the
following during the lesson:
Ms. Westfall had all students engaged throughout the 30
minute lesson.
The interactions between Ms. Westfall and students was
polite and respectful.
Ms. Westfall stated to objective and essential question at the
start of the lesson. She asked students to discuss their prior
knowledge of how plants respond to stimuli.
She also used random selecting as she called on students to
read from the text.
Ms. Westfall frequently paused to ask questions and to
clarify. Students also were allowed to continue to add
background information throughout the lesson to support
their understanding of the material.
She also used the text features in the passage to help
students understand content.
Students used body movements to support understanding of
vocabulary and content throughout the lesson.
Ms. Westfall used a variety of questions to challenge student
thinking and had genuine discussions during the lesson.
She used cooperative groups for the assessment questions
and did and end of lesson wrap-up.
Ms. Westfall is doing a great job supporting learning in the
classroom. She takes initiative to help students and has a great
rapport with the class.
