Key Assessment Part I

General Audience
The audience is composed of certified teachers with varied experiences. Teacher experiences range from first year
teachers to teachers who are retiring this year, and technologically savvy to no technology background.

Problem Identification
Douglas County has purchased a great deal of technology and has recently finished installing it into all schools around the
county. Unfortunately, for some reason, the county has shoved all of this technology into classrooms and not provided a
lot of professional development on how to use it or integrate it into teachers' lessons. In every classroom across the
county you will find a teacher laptop, promethean board, activexpressions, activslate, and ladybug (document camera).
These are all magnificent tools that can be utilized in the classroom, but teachers need to be properly trained on how to
use them or the will simply be dust collectors.

Instructional Goals

Teaches will be able to use and operate the Promethean Board for every day lessons.

Teacher will be able to register and have students use ActivExpressions.

Teacher will be able to register and use ActivSlate while instructing on Promethean Board.

Teacher will be able to utilize the Lady Bug (document camera) for instruction.

Key Assessment Part II

Introduction
The audience is composed of certified teachers with varied experiences. Teacher experiences range from first year
teachers to teachers who are retiring this year, and technologically savvy to no technology background. The ages of my
audience will range from 22 to 62. I am in an elementary school setting, that being the case, the majority of my target
audience will be female, 45 females and 2 males. Last year, this group of teachers was surveyed on their technology use
and ease of use of the technology in their rooms. Teacher range in grade level from Kindergarten to 5th grade in this
course. Almost 50% wanted more training on at least one device in their classroom, whether it be the Promethean Board,
document camera, computer, or any other device.
Attitude Towards Content and Academic Motivation
Douglas County has purchased a great deal of technology and has recently finished installing it into all schools around the
county. Unfortunately, for some reason, the county has shoved all of this technology into classrooms and not provided a
lot of professional development on how to use it or integrate it into teachers' lessons. In every classroom across the
county you will find a teacher laptop, promethean board, activexpressions, activslate, and ladybud (document camera).
These are all magnificent tools that can be utilized in the classroom, but teachers need to be properly trained on how to
use them or the will simply be dust collectors. Teachers have asked for hands-on training, versus a webinar or an email
of how to work their technology devices. This training will give them that hands-on work, along with direct feedback and
interaction. Teachers in the elementary school setting, from my experience, dont want to be told how to use something.
Most of them have 100 things on their plate as it is, and cant afford the time to read an email training them how to use
something. I would offer small group training of these wonderful technological tools and provide hand to hand
instructions. Also, being in the same building as my target group, it is very easy to hold additional trainings if teachers are
still experiencing difficulties.
Entry Skill

Teaches will be able to use and operate the Promethean Board to create instructional lessons.

Teacher will be able to register and have students use ActivExpressions for every day class use, as well as to
collect data.

Teacher will be able to register and use ActivSlate while instructing on Promethean Board to maximize
instuctional time.

Teacher will be able to utilize the Lady Bug (document camera) for instruction.

Teachers will be comfortable enough with technology in classroom to lead team trainings of their own with new
instructional ideas based on the technology in their classroom.
General Learning Preferences

Teachers greatly expressed there be small group face-to-face instruction. Instruction will be given during school hours by
grade level. Teams will meet during their planning times. This information was gathered from a vote at a faculty
meeting. Of those involved, 39 teachers stated they would rather have face-to-face small group training sessions rather
than as a whole school training.
Attitude Towards Training
Many of the older generation teacher (50 years and up) are not excited about the transition to using a lot of technology in
the classroom. However, they are more than willing to learn new teaching techniques and way to keep their students
engaged and learning.
Group Characteristics
Bill Arp Elementary School is located in Douglas County, Georgia. It is a large school of approximately 650 students.
Almost 40% of the students in the school qualify for free and reduced lunch. The teachers are ready and willing to learn
new techniques and ways to teach the children, but training must be provided.

Part III: Task Analysis

Technology in the classroom has vastly improved in the last five years in my county.
Unfortunately, just because the technology has been forced into the classroom, doesnt mean
teachers are being adequately trained on the devices. An example of this is the Promethean
Board. Many teachers do not know how to register the ActivExpressions which are designed to
accompany the board. I still have to visit individual classrooms of co-workers to teach them how
to register them, or simply do it for them. Here is a task analysis on how to register and name
the ActivExpressions to your Promethean Board. (This is assuming ActivInspire is already
installed on computer, which all computers in our county already have.) This task analysis is a
step-by-step run through of each task we will be performing during the course of this training. It
is necessary for teachers to have this so they may look back at it at any point in time.

Assessments and UDL

Lesson 1 Assessments:

ActivBoard Use Survey and Operating ActivExpression Device Quiz

o UDL: These assessments appeal to the UDL of Multiple Mean of Representation. All learners are
different. Whether it is a first grade student, or a 15-year teacher. The survey in this assessment requires
teachers to demonstrate their knowledge of ActivInspire, and what they would like to cover in future
trainings. It also requires them the structure in which they would like to have the training delivered.

Lesson 2 Assessments:

Flipchart functionality, design, creativeness, and attention to detail

o UDL: This assessment appeals to the UDL of Multiple Means of Action and Expression. Instructors
have different teaching styles the same way learners have different learning style. The assessment of the
instructors flipchart they created will be based on how they use it to drive instruction in their classroom
for their particular set of learners.

Lesson 3 Assessments:

Teacher Response to Peer Observation

UDL: This assessment appeals to the UDL of Multiple Means of Engagement. As teachers observe and
critique their fellow instructors, they will be looking for different methods of getting students involved in
learning. Their focus for this particular observation is how many different ways can the instructor get
their learners involved using ActivInpire software.

The learner will demonstrate how to find and download flipcharts previously created and shared
through Promethean Planet resource.

This sequence builds on concepts in a teacher friendly fashion. Teachers will be able to take concepts and ideas taught in
these lessons and apply them directly to their classrooms. The learner will proceed through the instruction just student
would sit through a structured lesson and model the behaviors being taught. This sequence also alternates teacher
interaction, processing, group discussion, and product proof of understanding to maintain high learner expectations.
Finally, this sequence allows the learner to establish understanding upon which to build with content from the previous
step in the sequence, allowing reflection and growth to take place.
Lesson 1: An Introduction to ActivInspire
Objective 1: Teachers will become familiar with ActivInspire and its resources.
Objective 1A.
Objective 1B.
Objective 1C.

Teachers will learn how to use ActivBoard

Teachers will learn how to use ActivExpressions
The learner will demonstrate how to register and assign ActivExpressions.

Motivational Strategy: As a teacher myself, I know how pointless it is to sit through a training that is not practical for
my situation. Maybe my school doesnt have the money to provide the resources, maybe the training is for science, and I
teach math. So many trainings we have to sit through, knowing we will never be able/willing to use the resource being
taught. So my purpose to these lessons is to keep the learners (teachers) engaged and let them drive the instruction so they
can take what they learn right back to their classrooms and put it to good use.
UDL Strategy: This is in alignment with the UDL Principle of Multiple Means of Engagement because it is giving the
training being perform a reason as to WHY this is important for our classrooms.

Initial Presentation: For a warm up/ice breaker exercise, have teachers come up to the ActivBoard one or two at a time
and write things they already know how to do using the ActivBoard. Talk about these things briefly, and get some ideas
rolling about how different teachers use the boards in their classrooms. Second, have the teachers come to the board
again, and this time, have them write down things they want to learn how to do, or dont perform well and would like to
get better at.

UDL Strategy: This is in alignment with the UDL Principle of multiple means of action and expression by allowing
learners to respond to the information being presented.
Generative Strategy: The instructor will go over all of the menu tabs within ActivInspire as well as all of the tools
available within the program. Providing examples of how to use them and what kinds of lessons each tool can be used
for. Teacher will then break off into groups of 4 to 5 to work with the different tools and navigate the different menu tabs
to familiarize themselves with the content. The teachers will them come back to a whole group setting where they will be
presented with a question on the board: How was your experience working through the different menus and tools of
ActivInspire? The teachers will respond using the ActivExpressions. The response can be in word form, a multiple
choice format, or a rating of 1-5. The instructor then demonstrates how to register and use the ActivExpressions to the
whole group by having the class register their own Expressions. Once familiar with the concept and questions are
answers, teachers will break off into their small groups again and practice registering and voting with the Expressions.

UDL Strategy: This is in alignment with the UDL Principle of multiple means of action and expression by allowing
learners to have hands on practice performing the tasks being trained.

Lesson 2: Building a Flipchart

Objective 2: The learner will build an interactive lesson within ActivInspire
Objective 2A.
Objective 2B.

The learner will construct a flipchart using ActivInspire.

The learner will demonstrate how to save and share a flipchart in ActivInspire.

Motivational Strategy: To start lesson two, have a Q & A session with the class about how they think getting the students
up and moving around by coming up to the ActivBoard during lessons and/or using the ActivExpressions during a lesson
can impact a classroom. Are there any negative drawbacks? What are the positives?
UDL Strategy: This is in alignment with the UDL Principle of Multiple Means of Engagement because it getting the
learners actively talking about how learning can take place with the use of ActivInspire.

Initial Presentation: The instructor will conduct a lesson on how to build a flipchart. This will take several different
mini-lessons as there are dozens of applications I would like to show the teachers how to use. After each mini-lesson, the
teachers will break into small groups of 4-5 and build their own flipcharts that can apply to their curriculum.

UDL Strategy: This is in alignment with the UDL Principle of multiple means of representation by allowing for
learners to interact with the content using a visual and/or hands on representation.

Generative Strategy: After each group has created their own flipcharts highlighting the specific applications for that
mini-lesson, the group will come back together and present their flipcharts. The groups will be able to ask questions about
how specific tasks were done or pages were created. This will be a great learning experience because some teachers will
discover more than others, and be able to present their findings.

UDL Strategy: This is in alignment with the UDL Principle of multiple means of action and expression by allowing
learners to have hands on practice performing the tasks being trained.

Lesson 3: Making Flipchart Your Own

Objective 3: The learner will demonstrate how to find and download flipcharts previously created and shared through
Promethean Planet resource.
Objective 3A.

The learner will design a variety of lessons using previously prepared flipcharts.

Objective 3B.

The learner will classify lessons into categories based on the topic.

Motivational Strategy: Have teachers respond, using ActivExpressions, to the question: What have you learned so far
that you will take to your classroom this week? Then allow 5-10 minutes for a class discussion elaborating on those
topics.
UDL Strategy: This is in alignment with the UDL Principle of Multiple Means of Engagement because it getting the
learners actively talking about how learning can take place with the use of ActivInspire.

Initial Presentation: Allow teachers to have laptops during this lesson. Instruct class on how to log on or register to
Promethean Planet. Next, briefly navigate the site and show all features available. Allow teachers to search for flipcharts
that they will be able to use. For the instructors example, take a middle school math flipchart and adjust it an elementary
school grade level. Show class how to edit, add, delete elements of the flipchart to make it fit into their lesson plan and
their style of teaching.

UDL Strategy: This is in alignment with the UDL Principle of multiple means of representation by allowing for
learners to interact with the content using a visual and/or hands on representation.

Generative Strategy: Again as groups, teachers will split off and edit a flipchart that has already been made. Teachers
should find a flipchart that pertains to their lesson. Then they will be assigned to edit it with different vocabulary,
problems, animations, and interactive components. Groups will reconvene and present flipcharts to the rest of the class as
if they were presenting it to their students. Have other classmates come to the board and use ActivExpressions as students
would also.
UDL Strategy: This is in alignment with the UDL Principle of multiple means of action and
expression by allowing learners to have hands on practice performing the tasks being trained.
Generative Strategy #2 (Culminating Activity): Teachers will be required to conduct 2 peer observations of another
teacher delivering a lesson using a Flipchart they either created or edited. There will be a checklist provided for the peer
observations. Check the components you observe and write down any questions or comments for reflection.

UDL Strategy: This is in alignment with the UDL Principle of multiple means of action and expression by allowing
teachers to choose the standard they use in presenting the information.

KA Part 8: Formative Evaluation Plan

Formative Evaluation Plan
As an instructor, we dont particularly like to hear any suggestions on the way we can perform differently in our
training or teaching. However, feedback is a vital tool for instruction and can improve it exponentially. For my training
module on ActivInspire and all of its software and hardware, two evaluations will be used. Feedback will come through
the SME (subject matter expert) as well as the participating facultys experience during the module. The SME for this
course is the technology instructor over the county. I will work with him to pin point specific needs in the area of this
training brought up by actual teachers. The SMEs feedback will come in the form of a survey conducted with the
instructor of the module present for any comments and questions/answers. The learners will complete a survey upon
completion of the module.
SME Interview Question:

2.
3.
4.
5.

Do you think the training module was productive to learners?

What will you do differently next time?
Was the content of the module helpful to some/all/none of its participants?
What will you add/take away from the next training?
Was the training successful in your opinion?

Analyzing Questionnaire:
It is important to keep the survey as short and sweet as possible, while still getting vital information from it.
Teachers these days are bombarded with surveys left and right. So much so that they dont even know what they are
filling the survey out for. For this reason, I will ask very specific question about the training conducted and what the
learners thought was positive and negative about the course. The information will be weighed fairly, and the course will
be adjusted accordingly, while still keeping the fidelity of the information needed within the training.
