Lesson question: What the names and values of coins? Can I use my knowledge of values to add several coins
together?
Common Core standard:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.C.8
Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and symbols
appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many cents do you have?

of each.

Have student choose a lettered bag and dump the coins. Help the student to sort
the coins onto the mat while saying the names of the coins. When all the coins from
that bag have been sorted, have students count the number of each type of coin
and record on the correct lettered bag on the sheet. Give a (+) if the student can
do this independently, a (-) if the student can do it with help, or a (0) if the student
is unable to do the task. This will be recorded in each box of the baggie sheet.
Step 2:
Use the nickels sheet with the values written on it. Have student cover each picture
with a nickel and count by fives up to 100.
Clear that sheet off and give the student the nickels sheet with the blank boxes.
Have students count by fives using the sheet and their memory. Record correct
answers on the table provided.
