Lesson question: What the names and values of coins? Can I use my knowledge of values to add several coins
together?
Common Core standard:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.C.8

Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and symbols
appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many cents do you have?
Lesson objective:

Opening:
I will show the students a money PowerPoint. The PowerPoint reviews the names and values of the coins and then
asks students to give the information back.

Procedure:
Tiered by challenge, complexity, resource:
The students will be split into three groups according to ability level for this topic. I will take a group, the classroom
teacher will take a group, and the classroom aide will take a group.

Group 1 - Beth, Abby and Nick: -sorting, naming, and counting


a. students will match coins to their names
b. students will work a coin mat and counting sheet to determine the number of each type of coin in bags A-D.
Group 2 - Tommy and Alex: sorting, naming and value of coins, counting coins and trying to skip count by 5's
a. students will work a coin mat and counting sheet to determine the number of each type of coin in bags A-D.
b. students will use a counting by fives nickels sheet. They will cover each nickel on the sheet and use the
written numbers to count aloud. When they have finished, they will do the same thing, but without written
numbers. The group leader will record correct verbal answers.
Group 3 - Erin and Joey: combining coin amounts - Erin is ok at this Joey, not so much.
a. students will use a counting by fives nickels sheet. They will cover each nickel on the sheet and use the
written numbers to count aloud. When they have finished, they will do the same thing, but write the
number in themselves.
b. Students will receive 6 bags of mixed coins valued at less than $1.00. The will add up the coins and record
answers on a chart.

Materials:

Step 1:

Give each student a penny, nickel, dime, and quarter.


Go over the names of the coins and place on the coin mat. Do this two or three
more times.
Step 2:
Have student choose a lettered bag and dump the coins. Help the student to sort
the coins onto the mat while saying the names of the coins. When all the coins from
that bag have been sorted, have students count the number of each type of coin
and record on the correct lettered bag on the sheet. Give a (+) if the student can
do this independently, a (-) if the student can do it with help, or a (0) if the student
is unable to do the task. This will be recorded in each box of the baggie sheet.
