‘The Chicago Heights Steel Safety Splice breakaway system can be used as a single (SSPO5a),
double (SSPOSb}, or Triple (SSPO5c) post sign support system within a 84" (or 7') span with a
PFP25 or PFP26 upper and lower post. These systems have been crash tested in both strong and
weak soil and have been judged to satisfy the requirements of 1994 AASHTO Standard
Specification for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaires and traffic signals. Testing was
conducted in accordance with the required NCHRP Report 350. The PFP25-26 base posts may be
driven or installed in preformed holes with back fill
COMPONENTS
‘The Chicago Heights Steel Safety Splice System consists of three components: a base post
(PFP25-26), a sign post (PFP25-26), and the splice hardware. The sign post and base post shall be
of like weight per foot, as specified by the user. (PFP25-26). The sign post lengths shall be supplied
in 12” increments beginning from 72" to 240" as required for the installation location.
The splice hardware required is proprietary and consists of two %s" diameter x 2" long
proprietary, grade 9, bolts and nuts. Two 1" diameter x %" long spacers shall be used per splice to
stiffen the connection. Each spacer shall be drilled with a 7/16" diameter hole, traversing its entire
length, along the center line of the spacer. The spacer shall be fabricated from hot rolled carbon
steel bars conforming to AASHTO M183 (ASTM A-36) or M1021 steel. Splice hardware may be
cadmium plated pursuant to ASTM A-165 or zinc plated to ASTM B-633.
soil plate (PLSO3) is required for all soil conditions.
INSTALLATION
‘The Chicago Heights Steel Safety Splice breakaway system requires a base post (Min of 48” for
PFP25 and 54” for PFP26) with a PLSO3 soil plate bolted a minimum of 4" to a maximum of 8"
below grade using %s" diameter bolts x 2%4" long grade 9 bolts and flange nuts. Base post can be
installed flushed with grade or project no more than 4”. Soil plate can be installed on either side
of base post with bolts being inserted from either side of the post. The base posts may be driven
or installed in preformed holes with backfill.
