Change in unit volume per degree change in temperature is termed “Coefficient of Expansion,” a factor which varies with varia- tions in the specific gravity of the asphaltic product. A temperature of 60°F is customarily used as the standard basis for volume determina- tions of asphalt and other petroleum products The American Society for Testing and Materials prepared and pub- lished extensive data tables on temperature-volume corrections of petroleum products. These tables appear in a book entitled ASTM-IP Petroleum Measurement Tables (ASTM designation D 1250). Temperature-Volume correction tables contained herein have been ex- tracted from this ASTM publication. Temperature-Volume correction data in U.S. customary units of measurement are given in Table A-1 for asphaltic materials having a specific gravity at 60°F above 0.966 (designated as Group O materials) and in metric units of measurement in Table A-la for asphaltic ma- terials having a density at 15°C above 0.9654. Example of Use. Assume a specific gravity of an asphaltic product to be 0.985 at 60°F. Assume also that a volume of this material is measured to be 9,000 gallons at a temperature of 180°F. Determine the volume of this material at the standard temperature of 60°F. Method. The specific gravity of 0.985 places the material in Group O. Opposite a temperature of 180°F in the tabulation for Group O materials, the correction factor is determined to be 0.9587. Multiplying 0.9587 x 9000 gallons give a volume at 60°F of 8628 gallons. 70 sau/tuoy —p0g— “dep porey —————~fsp-uang— sauing yo ad4y)] ——————n, 2#-— png ka oes Ge ie 006.L0~~ “ON POW, ata — ogeyy ska renting s2quisy hg po rvsndes sondyoors— (aydyvon) syzeay, uredxa ‘oy 31 BBO spot x are :arpaag 0 sondyoog Suypuey jo poussyy svenbopeuy 49g— aenbopy :epeoyyng 30 suonnieg opdyooig ‘ng souof — puvgs——— ‘0D 4918194—930994830 s301paus93uf7— 0D s91teg wosf 940824880 stuvoy——— ayeBauBBy jo 20mg O02# — WH o_ ¢ 001% — 4 Te Xx +# ~ I —r cana sqreuay, sepoag jo addy, mS By “oN: tad yag aided vontpueg TerueD 008 FX “ON [e195 10 [2poy_ 307057 —oxeyy, aiquu0g #25 quoueunng snonupuoy —~s2g— yoreg same jo adky, vopeuojuy sueyy aq ag ———waysey— Asanor T¥-t0L-F— welorg ANVId XIW-LOH—180d3a NOLLD3dSNI_ AUWNIWITaYd ee/Pe/s (continued next page) Figure A-1—Preliminary inspection report — hot-mix plant 79 wets won PLlEc/S #r TH OSL aeydsy bes #¢ #005L aesaussy lato | Pores ea suonenpery, Aypedeg, adky, rN 28978 isyeuray %-O- + ON Wid %—Z— 6 ON WIE % 6 Z “ON Ui TELE, BH - JoAOKED uado aw OF ¥ To uego wn BF € ———uado “if “bs og 4 uagor “yf “bs 96 1 syreUay sodig MopiaaQ «221g "IBSY “Ay wary w2.2g BuruadgQ wag ON WE ye uonrpuop isuaadag pus surg aBe1org ye x1 0} pausnyas ourzou yyy——_ prewoy umiay jo foRUOD 207091G1991G w02122)57-——- 2 rity ore saowayjop Inq. bebe spears —300] 20;va91q— aqny, jo voNe20] snus Z— 2BueYD OT 205 parmbas su, saZ— eaiqeasn(pe a ST sooo] —¢— 02 parenper A.009—— SU] ‘sorDsop9Q— SAL rsowaaq, Supespuy Tes alv sey Figure A-1—(Continued) 80 Pele Pai | syreuy i ck ruaskg peusig mg aBes01g 2yddns 29 your? yoydsy usym flo inys sunjg— syremay “X™ 8A7 YoOmy weg oewony ON TXT S84 = pareuqneg sxuey 2H20 Supeazy Jo poypayy ____0N _~X7 A - 80H apeydsy Mojaq pug aSreyosq odig Bunejnony: syed 199 QO! ¥ #— sonroedeD pue ‘oN :sxuEY, afeydry ON X77 88K Young onemomy Suusjeu g Fury1em svey— uones0] “so08 ‘Bop g— suonenpery —y.009-001~ sary —————syruusay 2— ayqeyy, imawmouy, sury ipeydsy aiv sqaeuay ——_——_— ON XTRA Suppopamy ‘uezzng—— yeusig yo addy doemooy ‘tut oe tele fooaaq, Surry, ruding poos sapped Pure qtuing jo vorpuoc Waa a —o009— Areden sHuquntO—— oreyy [peng syrenay HOqUINN IYTIOM 32], “GI OG PreptErg SAM WOE “$4 NYBM IUEIg ‘ONY SurymeM aqeMony FA addoy 1914 Figure A-1—(Continued) 81 aousug WOpsoy suoneogroads WIM é{dus0o Aq, posoaddy MK hy jeep {pa rondo on WEPLEYDAL Wed Fao Jopun sarenbi yosyQ — :230N Aq parsadsuy “duo Hueyd x1 snonunuos oy sureag syremex pue vorecuojey yeuon!ppy sropaog ONEMIOINY WoL], 1g us 20806 @ appa—— BUR, aEUdEY word qweusng wory aoraag Suydureg yo odKy, -2qn3 surg aBeing wary ianqpeg Suqdureg CUT, wor njoaar osprey qauNOD BoORNIOATY [—— ent soq dumg seqdse qm Surpop=auy 2EnD9Fq —————~_eoreypayy iiopaag aeBauRBy aweLE “ONY, —. #94 - paroqpef reas - dumg pure soury aeqdry ow HaempmiZ seydrys, 82 Figure A-1—(Continued) TABLE A-1—TEMPERATURE-VOLUME CORRECTIONS FOR ASPHALTIC MATERIALS, CUSTOMARY UNITS GROUP O—Specific Gravity at 60° F. It must be recognized, however, that temperature ranges indicated generally are above the minimum flash point for the MC and SC cutback asphaltic materials. In fact, some of these cutback asphalts will “flash” at temperatures below these indi- cated ranges. Accordingly, suitable safety precautions are mandatory at all times when handling these cutback asphalts. These safety precau- tions include, but are not limited to, the following: (1) Open flames or sparks must not be permitted close to these materials. Controlled heat should be applied in heating kettles, mixers, distributors, ot other equipment designed and approved for the purpose. (2) Open flames must not be used to inspect or examine drums, tank cars, or other containers in which these materials have been stored. (3) All vehicles transporting these materials must be properly vented. (4) Only experienced personnel must be permitted to supervise the handling of these materials, (S) All applicable intra- and inter-state commerce requirements must be met. an TABLE A-5—TYPICAL TEMPERATURE RANGES FOR MIXTURES CONTAINING ASPHALT CEMENTS, EMULSIFIED ASPHALTS AND CUTBACK ASPHALTS— DEGREES FAHRENHEIT (°F)* Pugmill Mixture Temperatures!
