SOL Standard: English 9.2 The student will produce, analyze, and evaluate
auditory, visual, and written media messages.
b) Determine the purpose of the media message and its effect on the audience.
c) Describe possible cause and effect relationships between mass media coverage
and public opinion trends.
d) Evaluate sources including advertisements, editorial, and feature stories for
relationships
between intent and factual content.
1.) Hopkins, E. (2013). Smoke: New York, New York: Margaret K
McElderry Books.
A verse novel about a girl who is trying to run away from the
mistakes made in her past. But the ghosts of her past are following
her to the future she is trying to make for herself. This is a sequel
novel to Burned by Ellen Hopkins. This was my Young Adult
Literature book.
Readability grade level 10.1
Suitability because of the somewhat adult content the book
contains, I think that it would only be suitable for older students.
2.) Postman, Neil and Steve Powers. (1992). How to Watch TV News.
Penguin Books.
This is a book all about informing the reader about how to
understand the news that they are watching. The authors are
trying to get the reader to understand that if someone is solely
relying on tv news they are going to be missing out on a lot of
information. I chose this book because it gives a beginning or a
backbone to evaluating sources of information.

3.) Collins, S. (2008). The Hunger Games. New York: Scholastic Press.

A young girl is fighting for her life while a dictator-like government

is slowly killing the citizens of their futuristic country of Panem. I
chose this book for these standards because there is a discussion
to be had about the information that the government is telling its
citizens versus what is actually happening in their country. Even
though this is a dystopian novel, there are aspects of media
evaluation that the students can apply to our lives now.
Readability grade level 5.3
Suitability Because of the violent content I would say that the book is
suitable for middle school and up.
4.) Berne, J. (2016). On a Beam of Light: A Story of Albert
Einstein. Chronicle Books.
This is a picture book about the life of Albert Einstein. It
focuses on how a life of imagination and hard work can lead
to success. I chose this book as a set off from the English SOL
9.2d, to get the students to evaluate this book between intent
and facts. While this is an uplifting little book, it leaves out
many vital parts of Einsteins life that may be important for
kids to know.

5.) Elbajir, N., B. Naik, and L.B. Allal. (2016). Belgium: Europes Front Line in the
War on Terror. CNN.
Retrieved from: http://www.cnn.com/2016/03/21/europe/belgium-terrorfight-molenbeek/index.html
This is a news
article about the
actions being
taken against
terrorists in
Europe. This is
something I would
choose for
students because
it is something
that directly
involves the world
that they are living
in. The students
can relate this to SOL English 9.2b to understand the effect this article has on
their own thinking. This could also work with any given news article.

Suitability High school because the content and the language are more
advanced and younger students would not fully grasp.

This is a website that is
packed with information
about Media Literacy and
the importance of having
it in this society. I chose
this website because I
believe it to be a very
good source of
information as well as
other links to even more
information about media

This is a poster that sums up all of the purposes of the
media and the different kinds of media in the world. I
believe that having this poster on hand in the classroom
while covering these SOLs is a good way to have a
reminder right there in front of the students faces what
they are learning about.

This is an informational article about being on your toes when you are
reading about current events about politics in the news. It cautions reader to

be skeptical on whether or not they are being

told the truth when they are reading, listening,
or watching the news.

Retrieved from:

This is a short, two-minute video
about what media literacy actually is. I
think this would be helpful in a
classroom because the teacher may
be trying to teach media literacy to
their students, but the students need
to actually know about what it is they
are learning about.
