Create Your Own Interest Group

Objective: Students will be able to create their own funny interest groups
by applying the knowledge of interest group strategies and procedures.
Step 1: What issue would you like your interest group to tackle?
Step 2: Where are you getting your seed money? (Be imaginative!)
Step 3: What is the stated purpose of your interest group? Is it ideological, publicinterest, business oriented, based on a social movement, based on a professional
group?
Step 4: How will you get people to join your interest group? What incentives can you
offer?
Step 5: What types of information will you be able to offer to Congresspeople? Make
a list or write a brochure.
Step 6: In order to get the attention of Congresspeople and to generate more
funding, youll need to have grass-roots support. Create a mass-membership arm of
your interest group complete with:
1. Slogan
2. Incentives
3. Two key phrases that arouse emotion and create urgency in your target
audience
4. Some famous people to endorse you
5. Letter, email, or phone call script for a mass campaign
6. 30-60 second commercial spot promoting your interest group and calling
people to action
