Not Their Fault Respectfully Submitted By: Brianna Mungo Date: March 22, 2016 GOALS & OBJECTIVES: To raise awareness for not only western human rights issues, but also prevalent issues faced in all corners of the world, through performance. To give performers a place to share their own original work, or see their original work performed live To (possibly) collect donations for a local organization (TBA) PROJECT DESCRIPTION: I plan to produce a theatrical revue of various pieces such as original scenes, monologues, poems, and songs, centered around rape culture. Topics covered will include reproductive rights, workplace harassment, consent, sex positivity, etc. The pieces performed will range from original works I will write for the show and pieces that performers have written themselves. I will hold auditions to screen performers, as well as any original submissions. PERSONNEL/MATERIAL RESOURCES NEEDED: Mentor Performers Original work Props, costumes (not extravagant, most likely will be provided by performers) Flyers, advertisements a venue PROCEDURE AND TIMELINE: SEE IT/BELIEVE IT: January 11-February 11: For my project topic, I have chosen rape culture. Ill be using theater as my means of showcasing original pieces centered around societys culture of blaming victims. I want to raise awareness on the harmful nature of this mindset, and I want to educate my audience on other important matters such as consent and sex positivity. RESEARCH IT: February 11-March 5: Start writing a collection of pieces that I will use at auditions. These will range from monologues, to scenes, to poems. I will view documentaries and read articles and books to garner inspiration. I will begin to ask those in my local community who have already shown interest, or I know would be interested, in my project if they would like to help me out with any input they may have or perform in the show. BUILD IT/DO IT: March 5-April 22: Contact those who have already expressed interest in being part of the show, hold auditions, find out if any auditionees have original work theyd like to perform, write more material if needed, rehearse! Most of
the pieces in the revue will be solo/small group-based, so that performers can rehearse on primarily their own time.
REFLECT ON IT: March 16-April 22: Some after-school run-throughs will be
held with the whole cast to gauge the shows progress and iron out any bumps. A final program will be created of the definite pieces included in the show. Ill advertise using social media, flyers, and word-of-mouth. A showing of the revue will take place April 22 in either the MU (if I can get it approved) or M-2. PRESENT IT: May 25: Throughout the rehearsal process and performance, I will be recording footage of the acts and interviews with the performers. Im going to compile the clips into a short documentary-style video that will be shown at my senior project presentation/speech. I anticipate this project will be the pinnacle of my CAA career, as the issues Im covering are things that have been brought to my attention and become of great importance to me during my time in the Arts Academy. It will also be the first real show that Ill be directing, which will give me the opportunity to utilize the skills that I have developed during my 4 years here. PROJECTED COSTS/EXPENSES & FUNDRAISING: Props/costumes (most likely provided by performers): $50 Advertising materials: $15 DESIRED OUTCOME: I want my audience to leave with a new understanding of issues people face all around the world. I want to share the stories of real people through monologues and scenes based upon real experiences I have read about in books and news articles. I want the performances included in my revue to move the audience to become more aware about the issue of rape culture, change any harmful mindsets they may have, and move them to make a difference. HOW WILL YOU GAUGE YOUR PROJECTS IMPACT? Ill have a short survey on the back of the program asking audience members various questions about the show they just saw, how it made them feel, and how they plan to make a change. POTENTIAL COMPLICATIONS/DELAYS & IDEAS TO OVERCOME THEM: Im aiming for the rehearsal period of this show to be after the winter musical and before the spring play, so as to not pile drama students with a show on top of a show. However, other events such as Ohlone and choir tour are during this period, which is why this project will mainly consist of solo/small group scenes, monologues, poems, and songs, that can be rehearsed on the performers own time. There will be after-school rehearsals in order to make sure that the performers are on track with their pieces and to provide help to those who need it, but those will be kept at a minimum. I will also be reaching out to non-CV students and adults whod like to participate to have a variety of performers.
IMPORTANCE OF PROJECT TO YOU AS AN ARTIST: As a freshman, I got to
participate in a seniors senior project show and I loved every moment of it. I was given an opportunity to perform on stage for an audience, which, sadly, is not something a lot of people with the desire for it get to experience. I want to give that same opportunity to perform to people who feel they dont have it as much as they should, as well as a platform for activists to share their voices through theater. With so much passion for performance and the power of storytelling through it, I know that we can create a fantastic showcase thatll provoke change in the community. IMPORTANCE OF PROJECT TO YOU AS A SOCIAL ACTIVIST: The entire reason why I perform is because I wish to impact other peoples lives. When I am on stage or on-screen, the audience is listening to me. My words and actions have the power to evoke emotions from strangers and make them think. I want to use this influence to create performances that speak about issues that are meaningful to me. Ive always been very passionate about changing the victim-blaming mindset that is so prevalent in todays society, and I want to use my voice as well as the voices of other like-minded individuals to create a performance that is not only fun to watch, but will spark genuine thought and conversation about the issues presented.
