Ne? Two etudes for unaccompanied saxophone, is two short etudes for
saxophone that was originally commissioned by Aya etin for flute. The flute
work was found by the saxophonist Matt Riley and suggested that I transcribe it
for alto saxophone. Thank you to Matt for this advice as it falls fairly well into the
saxophone repertoire with a few tweaks, of course.
Ne? tries to express the internal conflict from waiting on an answer to a
question or expression being asked. Ne from the Turkish language means
what. The piece begins with the first statement of the question. Waiting for
answer, the performer tries to reiterate portions of this question to make it easier
to understand. After realizing that it will not receive an answer, it begins to get
very frustrated and begins to stammer or quickly sputter out notes to make the
other understand. Which obviously never helps. Then it begins to realize this,
slows down and tries to ask the question again (cyclic). In the end, its question is
never really answered. The second etude, a more expressive and sentimental
feeling is the afterthought of the conflict. It reflects on the first etudes stammering
nature but tries to cope in another way.

Thank you again and enjoy!
