Down By the Bay

Objectives
1. Students will learn a story through a song
2. Students will follow the song, completing different actions
at specific parts.

Handwork
1. Each of the 6 students hold up their character card when
they are mentioned in the story
2. During the line, Down by the bay, students will slowly
point both of their hands down towards the floor
3. During the line, where the watermelon grows, the
students will slowly point both hands up towards the
ceiling
4. During the line, back to my home, the students will
point both thumbs behind them over their shoulders
5. During the line I dare not go, the students will continue
pointing behind them with their thumbs, and add the
shaking of their heads as if saying no
6. During the line, for if I do, the students will point one
thumb towards their chest
7. During the line my mother will say, the students will
shake one hand with the pointer finger up as if scolding
8. The student whos character card is mentioned holds it
high in the air
9. During the final line of the verse, down by the bay, all
students will say this excitedly and repeat
Footwork:
6 students holding character cards stand at the front of the room
while the rest of the students sit

Formation
6 students stand in a line at the front of the class holding 1
character card each. Paula and I stand on the ends to help
them and the rest of the class with lyrics.

Extensions/teaching tips
Extension: Once students have
mastered the song they can sing it
in a round: 1st group: Down by the
bay followed by 2nd group: Down
by the bay and so on.
