The western civilization believes in the survival of the fittest. The British brought democratic spirit to
India. The Indians united under Gandhiji and won their freedom through non-violence means. Modern
science has changed the world, and India cannot remain untouched by the Industrial Revolution that has
changed the face of Europe and America. India has to face the realities of the present and then, lay truly the
foundation of future.

Ram Mohan Roy was a good speaker and writer. He uses his eloquence to attack customs like 'Sati'.
128

Many orthodox people opposed him tooth and nail. But he went to fighting for a cause which was dear to
him. As a result of his efforts, the Government of India declared 'Sati' to be illegal. In fact, Ram Mohan Roy
wanted to simplify Hindusin which was them full of meaningless rituals.

The word 'Satya' (Truth) is derived from 'Sat', which means 'being'. Nothing is or exists in reality
except in truth. That is why sat or truth is perhaps the most important name of God. In fact, it is more
correct to say that Truth is God than to say that God is Truth. But as we cannot do without a ruler or a
General, such names of God as king of kings or the Almighty are and will remain generally current. On
deeper thingking it will be realised that 'Sat' or 'Satya' is the only name of God.

Science is, indeed a great blessing to mankind. It has brought about vast changes in human life. But it
is also a course. It has added much to human misery. It has invented many destructive weapons, Submarines,
posionous gases, tanks, long-range guns, explosives now exist for the destrcution of mankind. Today's war
shall be a war of small duration but of huge destruction.
