DAVID ROMEROS

PODCAST.

I'm David Romero. Im studying marine facilities section D. Ive been studying at UMC since 2014.
> Why did you decide to study this career?
Well, firstly I enjoy traveling a lot and I would like to travel around the world but doing something I also
like: mechanics. So, I decided to be a Maritime Engineer. I can repair all types of engines. On the other
hand, I may have a safe future for me and my family.
> What is your area of skill?
As I said before, I know that I am good at repairing or fixing things. However, I am studying hard to learn
all about engines to get to know how they operate and the maintenance of the different mechanical
systems found on board.
> What are you going to be responsible for?
As a third assistant engineer I am going to be responsible for maintaining the pumps, air compressors,
oil, bilge , and oily water separation systems. All this machinery must be running perfectly for a safe
navigation, so we can fulfill our responsibility which is to transport all kinds of cargo around the world.
> What maritime terms have you learned so far?
I have learned many maritime terms for example the main parts of ship: I can mention the bridge which
is the main control center of the ship, the bow which is the extreme forward end of the vessel. The
bulbous bow for reducing the movements of the vessel in heavy seas.
Moreover, I learned that the machinery includes the main engines and the auxiliary machinery like the
boilers, the pumps, generators, etc
> Define at least five maritime terms.
Starboard: its the right hand side of the ship.
Port: Its the left side of the ship.
Length overall: Its the maximum length of a vessel from bow to stern.
Decks: They are the floors of the vessel.
Cargo ships: They are designed for transporting cargo and They are divided into dry cargo ships and
liquid cargo ships.
> Why is it important for you to learn these terms?
> Learning these terms is important because we must know well everything related to the place where
we are going to spend our lives, the vessel. Besides that, we have to know how they are named in
English since this language has been established as the lingua franca for all seamen all over the world.
