Chosen Career Research
1
My career goal is to be successful and use my skills in my chosen career, and to make use
of my skills and experience to help people the best way I can.
2
The minimum educational requirement to become a social worker in most parts of the
country is a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree. Even in those areas where a diploma is
acceptable for some positions, completing a degree can open more positions up to you.
University teaching positions require a PhD in social work. The individual provinces regulate
social work in Canada. Depending on the province, you may need to be registered with the
provincial regulatory body. This usually requires completion of a bachelors or masters
degree in social work. Social workers deal with people who are in a lot of difficulty. The work
can be distressing and draining, so emotional strength and maturity are essential. It is also

important to have a genuine interest in helping people. As well, you must have good
interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
3
Obtain information and prepare reports or case histories; Implement life skills workshops;
Appraise clients' needs or eligibility for specific services; Assess client's relevant skill
strengths and development needs; Conduct follow-up assessments; Resolve conflict
situations; Implement behaviour management programs; Establish registry of special needs
support workers; Develop service intervention logic models and outcome measures;
Maintain program statistics for purposes of evaluation and research; Screen, recruit and
train volunteers and support staff; Develop, co-ordinate and implement the delivery of
specific services within the community; Assist clients/guests with special needs; Liaise with
other social services agencies and health care providers involved with clients
4
From the job posting, a total of 5years or over is required in my experience field. Yes it is in
addition to training. Yes, you should have volunteered for a lot of organization before going
into this line of work. Yes, co-op experience is typical in the training component of this
career.

Yes volunteer experience is available in this career field. I can obtain volunteer experience
at Big brothers, Big sisters and I would incorporate this volunteering experience, by giving
me direct one-on-one experience with at-risk youth and also valuable experience for me
who is looking to work with children, families, or schools.

The average rate paid for my chosen career is $52,000 to $66,000 a year.

This is a video I found on YouTube on an Amanda Dugenske, who is currently a family skill
specialist. She explained in her video that the work environment is more practical, in the
sense that you have to go meet up with the clients and access them, she said the job takes
all day most times, because you have to access and talk to the clients which is like therapy
sections, and also she sees two clients at most in a day. And the work makes you adjust to
life, because you never really know what is coming you way, everyday, so it is necessary to
have this adjustments. The related work activity, is you become a medical personnel to the
client, because you tend to heal their problems, which is a huge part of their life, were it is
hurting. The pay is good she said and it is $52,00 to $66,00 a year depending on the
province.

MOTIVATORS
The mentally challenged individuals involved in this career path, inspire me seeing the
need for a shoulder to cry on, and also how they seek help from people in my career is
amazing, they come for us, to talk and open up so we can find a way to their problems, that
is wonderful and makes me want to go into this career more often.

The need to make a difference in this career path is also something that motivates me
more often, being able to go into the career and actually help people solve this problems
and see smiles on their faces, is more than just the pay but the passion to see this peoples
problem solved and seeing everyone living in a free community where they arent abused

or cant go through with their problems.

I have been through therapy, and I have struggle with most of this issues, and seeing how I
went through this, I really would love to help people out of it gradually and show them that
there is hope and that there is always a solutions to their problems.
BARRIERS
Emotional stability is one of the barriers for me presently, because I am presently going
through therapy and I need the stability currently, and going through this program is
going to be emotionally draining, so thats a barriers, because my parents are against it,
but I believe I can go into it and be okay.
Another barrier is I have this passion for the media and I would love to go into the
media too, but I also have a passion for social work, so am currently trying to figure out
how to solve this problem.

10
RESOURCES TO HELP ME SUCEED
Get a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited social work degree.
Volunteering work
Learn about social work online
Incorporate the habit of good communication and problem solving skills
RSOURCES I MAY LACK
Not meeting the general requirement to earn a degree
Not being able to pay up my housing rentals
Not being Financially stable
Poor communication skills
11
I would first apply at a university after my program at Niagara College is ending in august.
Afterwards when I get accepted, I would then get pursue my career path at the university.
Then I would gain volunteering experience path time while in school, so I could work on my
communication, intrapersonal, and problem solving skills. By then after am done with
school and the volunteering process I would have gained enough experience, then I would

apply for a job in Toronto as a social worker at a social work agency, and if they arent any
jobs there, I would relocate to anther areas where there are jobs offered in my field of work.

My communication skills can be very helpful to other fields, by being polite and also

knowing how to engage in a beneficial and good conversation.

Proficient in Microsoft, this also can be very helpful to certain fields, where you need to do

simple things as type a document or print a paperwork that can be helpful.

Patience also can be a great skill for other fields, because working around people you need

to have patience to be able to succeed.

Multitasking, is also a skill that can be incorporated into any field of work, because when
your working in most fields you need to know how to multitask and get the job done on
time.

I would get volunteering experiences from time to time, in different fields of work, so by doing this,
when I would want to change my career path in the future, it wont be a problem, because I already
have some volunteering experience in the field.
