Two of the key technologies for future colour reproduction are displays and 3D printing. In
both the rapidly evolving technology is creating new challenges and opportunities for colour
management.
In the display market, the quality and capability of LCD displays is well established, but
newer technologies such as OLED, quantum dot-display and various transparent displays
have the possibility of matching or even surpassing the best LCDs.
The ability to accurately reproduce colour is a key differentiator between different display
market categories. Yet display colour management is becoming more complex, with a wider
ranger of display gamuts, standard colour encodings, measurement and profiling methods.
In the 3D printer market, existing systems are mostly limited in their colour capability by the
marking materials, whose structural properties are often more important than their
appearance. User expectations for better reproduction of colour appearance are beginning
to be addressed, but there are many research challenges that are not addressed in
traditional 2D printing.
In conjunction with BenQ and the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, ICC
is holding a meeting on Colour Management in Displays and 3D printing in Taipei on May 6-7
2016. The meeting is co-hosted by Ben-Q, the National Taiwan University of Science and
Technology and the Taiwan 3D Print Manufacturers' Association.
ICC invites papers that address aspects of colour in displays and 3D print from industry
experts and researchers. Short abstracts should be sent to the ICC Technical Secretary
(green@colourspace.demon.co.uk) by November 1 2015.
