University of North Dakotas award-winning television program features

UND Nursing and tobacco prevention.
This week on Studio One, find out how UND is helping to educate nurses for the future. Also, hear Kailee
Dvorak talk about tobacco prevention in the Grand Forks community.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. America's nurses make up the largest segment of the U.S. health care
workforce and nursing is one of the fastest growing occupations in the country. Despite that growth,
demand is out pacing supply. One factor is the lack of nurse educators. Gayle Roux, Dean of College of
Nursing and Professional Disciplines, said, "Another variable is the aging population. As our
population is aging and we have a much larger need for care of people with chronic health conditions,
it creates a nursing shortage." Other strategies to address the shortage include incentives for nurses to
become nurse educators through fellowships and student loan forgiveness.
Also, according to a report by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, North Dakota is the only state
spending enough money on tobacco prevention. The funds are going towards prevention in youth
and decreasing tobacco usage in general. Kailee Dvorak, a tobacco prevention coordinator at Grand
Forks Public Health, sees positive changes related to tobacco use in the Grand Forks community.
Dvorak says, Here in Grand Forks we receive funds from the center (Breathe ND) to work locally on
tobacco prevention and control policy in accordance with CDC best practices.
