POWER POINT NOTES FOR SOCIAL JUDGING AND CONFORMING/STEREOTYPING
SLIDE 2:
In short, stereotypes can refer to interpersonal beliefs that we learn either by what
someone tells us or by something we saw.
In fact, most of what we know about members of human categories is hearsaystuff we picked
up from hearing other people say.
SLIDE 3:

Story about my friend in grocery store in regards to Native Americans earrings.

SLIDE 4:
Pic cop with donutsperceived stereotypical behavior in the US. Although not all
cops are seen with donuts, which makes this a rare occasion making it stand out in peoples mind;
is an inaccurate stereotype.
SLIDE 5:

Pic insinuating that men are not to be a nurse.

SLIDE 6:
Pic of Rabbi Cop. When I first saw the pic I thought he was an actor (inaccurate
stereotype). He does not fit the stereotype of a cop or a rabbi yet he is both.
We all use them all the time without knowing it. My friend and I at Barnes and Nobel
dressed VERY casual lady assumed we lived in an apartment.
SLIDE 7:
Not all stereotypes are bad: In 1922, Walter Lippmann coined the phrase
stereotyping. He believed that not all stereotyping was bad. He believed it could be used as a
need to make sense of complicated environments; that it could be used as a survival tool. For
example: Pic of man in a black hoody in an ally, could be used as a safety tool to get out of the
area.
SLIDE 8:
Pros & Cons Pros: (read from slide). Cons: Prejudice Inaccurate
stereotyping Prejudice is often learned at an early age; it is irrational & not based on reality.
Most people are not even aware of their own prejudices because they do not know their
assumptions are based on inaccurate information. Discrimination Stereotyping can lead to
discrimination which is unjust practice or behavior, intentional or not; based on race, religious
beliefs, color, gender, disabilities (physical or mental), marital status, family status, source of
income, age, ancestry, place of origin or sexual orientationthe list could go on and on. Either
way all of which can have a negative effect on any individual or group. READ FROM
SLIDECan make it so we can never reach things. If Im white I can never have natural dark
skin or black curly hair. If Im black I can never have white skin with blonde hair, which
oppresses me and vice versa. Low Self-Esteem: Ex: All men are good mechanicsso if Im a
man and not a good mechanic than I must not be a good man or be good enough.
