Summary
After seven decades, it seems that the Second World War is still an unconquered past when it comes not only to establishing and identification of the scale of crime and human losses but also to their echo which reverberates in post-generations. Hence, the starting point for research on the culture of remembrance is anchored in a historical event shooting civilian population at the largest place of execution in Kraljevo, but not the only one, in October 1941. The war crime
against humanity committed by the German Wehrmacht units was carried out due to the exclusive Nazi ideology about
the value of a hundred lives of civilians in Serbia for one killed German soldier, and fifty for a wounded one. In retouching
the picture of perishing at the place of execution called lager, the authentic fragments kept in the museum collections are
historical sources, original artistic and other objects and documents of shot civilians, among them Serbs, Slovenes, Russians, Roma both those who had been employed in Kraljevo between the two world wars and refugees due to the occupation circumstances, as well as the works of artists from the former Yugoslavia that were inspired by the scale of the
tragedy. The focus of the exhibition is directed to the relations between the real, but sufficiently horrific scale of the October perishing, which is described by the memorial museum heritage and narratives of the hostages who survived, and a
different, mythologized picture of the tragedy created in the public discourse of the after-war Yugoslavia. The Reich ideology was characterized by exclusiveness and intolerance, established even since the Race Laws of 1935, and implemented in concentration camps, in transports, at places of execution, by reducing persons to numbers, without names and surnames, origins, families, privacy The long shadow of the past, in which the identities of victims were annihilated, extended to commemorative practice and victims confined in the total, proclaimed numbers in political speeches, pieces
of art, monumental sculpture and musical-scene performances in programmes. The politicized past was adopted at the
place of execution and graveyard turned into the Memorial Park, during October Ceremonies, on every 14th October. In the
perception of the past, the appropriately chosen date for the memorial ceremony was identified with the dating of the
tragedy, which, according to the authentic sources, lasted from the raid and detention of hostages in the locomotive hall,
from the beginning of October until the execution of shooting from 15 to 20 October 1941. The creation of myths and
the acceptance of a mythologized picture are not rationally explicable, except in the domain of the psychological, that the
contemporaries were under the influence of the tragicalness of the event unprecedented in the history of the Kraljevo region until the first year of the war. Museological undertakings of establishing individual identities of victims and consequences of their totality, investigations of preserved historical sources and observations of artistic expressions of pain and
memory in the museum collections as an asylum were not made unnecessary by the mythologized representations perceived by post-generations. Therefore, the methodological backbone of the presented topic is in the universal messages
of the culture of remembrance that oblivion would mean amnesty not only for those who committed the crime but also for
the crime itself, and the ultimate death of the victims.
